I am mounting my Garmin to the handlebars, and I'm running the power down the electrical wires, through the middle of the bike, then along the right frame rail to the outside of the big wire bundle. I've zip-tied the wire to the bundle, and then run it straight to the battery.

I'm not thrilled with the routing, nor the straight batter hookup, but it works...at least when the bike is off. Do I need to worry about heat melting any wires?

As to the install, the only thing that went poorly was that one of the rubber grommits for the fairing (the one on the top that connects the top shelf with the top side fairing and the wide side fairing) was pushed through, and I can't find it on the bike anywhere. I'm sure this will add a nice rattle to the bike, and potentially some nice burning smell if I can't find it. I removed the whole thing again looking for it but it is literally just gone! I'll take some pics later today and show you what I'm talking about. In the meantime...is heat a concern?

Heat is not a problem as long as the wire isn't touching the engine. It may even be able to handle that but I wouldn't try. 09320-06016 is the part number for the grommet. Put a little silicone grease on the hole next time and it will be less likely to be pushed out.

I found the grommet under the car...not the car next to where I was working on the bike. That thing must have rolled, it was clear on the other side of a 3 car garage.

I took a look at my routing...nothing touches the engine. I'm not happy with the wiring directly to the battery. I think I want a switched source. I looked all around the left side behind the radiator, but couldn't find it. Since I'm thinking of more stuff later (heated clothing specifically, I think I'm going to get an AP1 box and switch it with the rear brake.

Between this site and the rapid forums site, I have learned a lot about wiring etc. I only hope I have learned more than just enough to be dangerous :).

I'm about to do this same wiring job for my Zumo and just want to confirm that you had the remove the fairing all the way to run the wire? Any other problems accessing the wire bundle?

I'm planning to solder the Zumo wiring harness into a spare battery tender plug that I have and then just plug it into the battery tender plug already on the bike's battery. Not too concerned about a switched set-up since I won't be leaving the Zumo on the bike.

I don't know if it was necessary to remove the fairing, but it made the job a lot easier.

I was able to run several wires along the main wire harness (left side of the frame if you're sitting on the bike) by just lifting the tank. So I took off the gauge cluster and the little plastic piece by the tank and separated the side fairing enough to lift the tank, but that's it. It was pretty tight in there, but I got it secure and zip-tied in several places. So far no heat issues.

I've run many wires along the left side wiring harness without removing anything. It's really tight in there but can be done.

I have my Zumo right off the battery and like it that way.

I have TomTom RR2, wired direct to the battery (fused of course). I accidently left it on for 2 days, bike fired right up no problemo.
