So about to weeks ago I dumped my 2012 dl650 on pavement. I just fixed everything I could see and took it out for a ride just today to find out that when I take the bike over 30 Mph and also engine brake in that speed range my handle bars are wobbling back and forth I'm thinking it has to do with the front forks. I know my front left fork got knicked at the bottom in the accident but I'm hoping this something I could fix and won't have to replace the forks. Just wondering what everyone's thoughts were on it and if I should just bring it to a shop and take the Butt raping.

Assuming the forks aren't bent it's probably nothing serious.
Just check the wheel, forks and handlebars are properly aligned and the clamps all tensioned properly.
You could have just gotten some air into the bottom of one or both of the forks when you went down and it will take a little cycling up and down to work it all out.

hands on the bars? or hands off the bars?.........if off the bars, almost every Vstrom will shake it's head in that speed range while coasting down....

Thanks for the responses I can feel it moving with my hands on the bars then when released it shakes a good amount.

Just check the wheel, forks and handlebars are properly aligned and the clamps all tensioned properly.
You could have just gotten some air into the bottom of one or both of the forks when you went down and it will take a little cycling up and down to work it all out.
So you think I should ride it around a bit and see what happens I was nervous to ride it much so I wouldn't mess anything else up.

When you had the forks apart, did you roll the uppers on a flat surface and confirm that they are straight? Try loosening one upper at a time in the triple trees, rotate it 180 degrees, tighten, and ride to check for a difference.

With the springs out, do the forks extend and compress smoothly?

With the front wheel off the floor, is there any looseness or roughness in the steering stem bearing? This is tricky..it needs very slight resistance to turning, but not too much.

Triple trees and forks aligned? Wheel true?

I'd pump the forks up and down at a standstill to get the air up and out of the oil rather than just riding it and hoping for the best, but I'd also look into the other suggestions in this thread. It's worth making sure things are right.

Yeah thanks a lot guys I'm going to take these forks off tonight and give them a close examination and the rim or wheel seems to be find just some road rash on the lip of it.

Loosen, but not to the point of falling through the fork clamp bolts. (Help to hold the bike up is useful).

Put the wheel between your knees, shake the bars side to side, reducing the amplitude, re-tighten the clamp bolts.

Happened to me as well, odds are the hit has twisted the tubes in the clamps.

I had a bike that had forks twisted in the clamps, not bent. It gave symptoms of falling into a turn one way, & resisting to turn the other way.

Well guys I figured it out looks like the weight on my wheel got knicked off and is throwing off the balance of the wheel thanks for all your input. Glad this wasn't suspension related.

I hope that solved your problem. But I am very skeptical. After ANY accident, especially one that shows damage on the forks, you should do a very complete inspection of the front forks and triple tree assembly. Follow PTRiders advice closely.....
