I know this is insanely vague, but I thought I would give it a try.

Any gear, from about 3000 to 3500 rpm, I'm getting a buzzing from the front end. It's definitely something vibrating loose. But for the life of me, i can't find it. I drive around the block trying to hold rpm, and then hold the clutch and brake wires, body work, windscreen, etc, and I just cannot track it down.

I know the joke... "Doc it hurts when I do this;" "Then I recommend you don't do that."

But I've barely gone over 350 miles. I'm still breaking it in, so completely avoiding 3k to 3500 rpm is a bit impossible for a little while longer.

Any ideas where to start?

Hi Furious, you got an added extra from the factory at no cost. Get out the old tool box and start checking for lose fittings, nuts and bolts. Good way to eliminate certain items and learn a little about the bike in the process. Also with the bike park and shut off, try thumping the body work and panels and listen for noises and such. The noise might be coming from either end of the bike so give it a whirl. Ride On, Ride Safe.

Check the wiring harnesses on the inside of the left fairing. They're not really secured to anything and tend to flop around and make noise. Some zip-ties and duct tape will take care of them. Also do what water warrior suggested. Check all those little plastic clips, too. I had one missing on my K5.

What Water Warrior said, sit down for a couple hours with your tools and tighten ever single nut and bolt starting from the front and continuing to the back. Get inside the front fairing and check everything, use a flashlight to find hose lines, and things "hidden" in there, etc. I've noticed that "important" bolts on the engine, calipers, forks, axles, etc. generally don't need to be tightened but it doesn't hurt to check EVERYTHING.

The only bolts I can't get to that I know I do need to tighten on my 850 mile bike is the damn rear exhaust bolts attaching the pipe to the engine! I think it may be impossible to get to these without pulling out the engine out! :( Maybe if I had a custom tool I could but not with standard allens head tools (socket and normal) that I have.

ChrisW123, it is written in the stars. If you buy that custom tool you will never need it. Been there, dun that, have a lot of stupid tools somewhere.

I hear that. Just drives me nuts that I can't tighten them. I think if I somehow could fashion a "U" shaped allens head tool I could tighten at least the right side bolt. :( I doubt I'll try it though. I'll probably just wait until I hear it leaking like you said, just like with my oil drain plug washer, where I'm going to wait to replace it until it starts leaking!!! :D :D :D

I managed to thread a long Allen key to the rear exhaust collar. The trouble is, I couldn't get enough leverage on it to tighten them. :roll:

One of these days, I'm going to poke around Harbor Freight to find some kind of U-joint socket attachment that might do the trick. The nice thing about HF is that you can get stuff cheap if you're only going to use it once or twice.

Mine does it too. Everything I could get to was tight, I might try loosening and re-tightning all the fasteners and see if that helps.

Furious, just remembered. There are two fairing screws on the front/top of fairing just a little under the windshield( no need to remove shield )outer edge. I must have given them 4 complete turns in. And one more each in the fairing air ducts but they were tight. Wrench On.

Thanks everyone. I'll start doing the limbo around the bike to find all my screws and fasteners and see if i can find what is loose.

I also heard last night when stopped some sort of metallic plinking near the exhaust manifold. I don't remember hearing that before when i stopped. But i got caught in an unexpected rain shower, so i convinced myself it has something to do with that. Crossing my fingers it was nothing, or at worst, just something i had never noticed before.

Caveat: I am super-sensitive to sound. any little new buzz, whine, or whir always puts me on alert. So i accept that all this may be normal noise and i just need to calm down.

Furious, the plinking is probably the exhaust cooling and expanding or expanding with the different temps. Used to get that a lot on a V-8 with headers. Think of it as normal. But don't stop listening, you might miss a real issue one day and that could hurt you. Ride On.
