Fork mounted lights

For Conspicuosity. I have searched the threads, want to have more triangular light print than putting them on the light bar under the headlights, looked at the reflector boss - 5 mm bolt, the fender mount - 6 mm bolt, plus the possibility of crushing the fender mount tab when tightening. Then I saw the axle is hollow. What would be wrong with running a 5/16th or 3/8th bolt all the way through and mounting the LED's on the ends? What am i missing, besides adding to unsprung weight?

One study from Australia actually determined that a motorcyclist is 37% less likely to involved in a collision with another vehicle when wearing HiViz gear.
Actually, the best defense is to dress like a cop and ride a white bike. Police-like motorcycles, because they tend to inspire a fear reaction, register consciously in drivers' brains very readily, much more so than other non-car-like objects.

And no, I can't cite the study, sorry. :)

Bingo!!!!

I can confirm that 1) with my white helmet with silver on white Chequer reflective sitckers; 2) emergency vehicle LED lights (used as indicators, even when un-illuminated) and 3) light blue top (standard cop colour in Australia); all speeders would come up fast next to me, slam the brakes and drop back for 15 seconds before realising i am couldnt be a undercover cop and continue speeding!

+1 on that.
I know we are getting off topic here, but earlier this year I was riding with my HiViz vest on. I pulled into a coffee shop parking lot and noticed a car following me. As I was taking off my helmet the woman driver came over to me and said, " officer could you please tell me how to get to ....." That's when I realized the benefits od HiViz.
I know I'm to some extent more visible. That's my goal. I don't rely on lights to save me. Just as I wouldn't rely on loud pipes, if I had them, to save my life.
I'm skeptical enough to view a report from the MSF about whether additional mandated and "added cost to the manufacturers" items would reduce crashes. Remember the MSF and the Motorcycle Industry Council is the same entity for all intents and purposes. (I'm a MSF RiderCoach and support the MSF rider training efforts but when manufacturer money is involved trust no one.) An example would be ABS availability. The distances on the report cited are actually fairly close to each other. I think I'd be happy if all drivers gave me that much space before turning in front of me. The subjects in the study were told to look for the motorcycle. My goal is to be seen by those not looking for me.

If I put something on my bike that causes me to stand out from the crowd I increase the chances of being seen. But like the mandated eye level high mounted stoplights on all cars after 1986 once they become the norm the uniqueness and advantages decrease.

To the original poster. Do something or a combination of things to stand out but like has been said, don't rely on it. Hi-Viz works too.

I mounted some cheapo LEDs from Ebay on some home made brackets using the fender mounts.. so far they have held up great, even through the Trans Lab

I just mounted the CREE 10w lights off Amazon with a switch as recommended of this thread and wow...exactly what I was looking for and they're blinding bright. No mod needed and I even used the oem fender bolt. Total invested $50. Thanks guys.

My buddy has those exact lights on his K8 and boy oh boy are they bright. Even down low like that it's tough to look at his bike in my mirrors. I call them his light sabers. Burned retina status!
