I liked the extra light on the road provided by the driving lights I had on my last strom, but to be effective without blinding oncoming traffic, driving lights need to be mounted as high as possible. On the strom this is close to the headlights, which doesn't help conspicuity much since the bike's lighting profile is still just a (larger) apparent single blob of light.

Since I got the new wee last fall, I've been planning to add some running lights for visibility. Ideally that means the lights should be down low for the "triangle of light" effect, and yellow or amber since those colors are more noticeable in traffic than standard halogen or HID bulbs.

Fog lights can be down low, but I haven't been able to find any yellow bulbs that aren't 55W or more. I know you can get MR16 or MR11 lights with yellow 20W bulbs, but I figured if I was going to have lights that didn't put much illumination on the road, I wanted them to use as little power as possible, so LED is the obvious choice.

I wanted something brighter and with a larger face than the available standard-base LED bulbs. I figured I would use the Whelen LIN3 or TIR3 lightheads as several others have, until I found the Nova SLMINI. It's cheaper than either of the Whelens, entirely sealed and self-contained, and only 1/3" thick. They're bright as f&ck but only draw 0.5 amp each.




I made brackets from 3/4" x 1/8" aluminum bar stock, and painted them and the back of the lightheads black to blend in better with the forks and fender.



I got some longer bolts to replace the fender bolts and mounted the brackets there. (Now I wish I had rounded the corners of the bracket for a more finished look.)



I bundled the wires with the speedo and ABS sensor wires on the fork, then they run back to the fuse block under the seat. I wanted to use posi-locks but didn't have any of the waterproof kind, so I wrapped the whole connection in shrink tubing.

red ones would make great brake aux lights with the flashing
Yeah, if I ever get aluminum panniers I'll put one on each as extra brake/tail lights.

Questions:

Can these be synchronized on the flashing? I believe flashing amber is legal, as long as its a regular non-alternating pattern, right?

Be nice to have em steady on but w/ a switch somewhere so I could get em flashing if needed, but flashing together.

And on the tail-lamp, any idea what is needed for these to mount to my Pelicans? I assume you'd need some relay deal and I thought they'd only be legal for flashing if they eventually go solid red, right? Although I suppose one could get by on this if they are usually off and only flash on brake.

$90 for 2 plus $8 shipping the cheapest y'all have found?

So the guy in the video says that they have a "steady burn" also. ? Is that one of the patterns and do you have to program it everytime the bikes ignition is turned on?

Very good solution for being seen.

I purchased one for an additional brake light. It should get here on Thursday. If I can figure out how, I'll post a video when I'm done.

The instructions for setting the strobe pattern are on the bottom of the wiring instructions.

Here is a list of the options for patterns.

3 Double Flash - 2 Flash Bursts. All LEDs firing.115 Double Flashes Per Minute.
4 Quad Flash - 4 Flash Bursts. All LEDs firing. 140 Quad Flashes Per Minute.
5 Mega Flash - 1 Flash Burst. All LEDs firing. 500 Flashes Per Minute.
6 Phased Mega - 1 Flash Burst. All LEDs firing. Varies from 360 to 1200 Flashes Per Minute.
7 Deciblast - 10 Flash Bursts. All LEDs firing. 170 Deci Flashes Per Minute.
8 Flasher - Wig-Wag Flasher pattern. 3 Flashes per second flash rate.

I have them set on steady burn. You step through the flash patterns by applying power to a third wire. It retains your setting until you power that wire again. I set them to steady burn, then cut most of that wire off, since it's very unlikely I'll want to use the lighthead's built-in flasher. If you want to use them as turn signals/hazards, the bike's signal flasher is the best way to control them anyway.

I don't think using the built-in flash patterns would be a good idea, except maybe in red as a flashing brake light. The flash patterns are so distinctively police/fire/ambulance-style, they would probably be confusing for other drivers.

They could certainly be used as turn signals, simply set them to steady burn and patch them into the signal wires. You could put a switch inline that toggles between steady power (for running lights) and the turn signal wires. And I'm sure someone who knew what they were doing could create a circuit to do that automatically whenever the turn signals are switched on.

To use them for flashing brake that goes solid, you'll need a controller of some sort, but not a relay. You could just choose one of the built-in flash patterns and wire them in with the brake lights. I believe continuous flashing brake lights are legal (except maybe in California), but that would get pretty annoying for anyone behind you in traffic. Did I mention they're really bright? I think setting them on steady burn for simple aux brake light(s) would be fine.

They were only $40 each when I bought them at a special introductory price. I haven't seen them anywhere else, but then I haven't been looking either...

I'd rather that than the guy behind me say "Sorry didn't see you mate!" After having been rear-ended twice, motorists can have the annoyance of seeing me. Maybe it's just my cute rear end? Hmmm

I like the idea, I'm going to see if they will ship to Canada other than UPS. Anyone know about the legality of strobing in the great white north?

No need. You can buy ElectroPods up here. Most bike shops have them, or can get them. I picked up some at Royal Distributing for a very resaonable price.

Thanks for the idea. I pulled my back a week ago and wanted to do a few kilometers of riding to see how far I am into the healing process. This was the perfect reason to ride 300 kms. :) And now I have another project to complete.

Did you splice the wires running to the tail light or you connected the pods to the brake switch as it is suggested in the installation notes?
