So this is my third set of Krator Off-Road style footpegs. Last two sets installed on KLR's. These fit the V-Strom just as well (2009 Wee)

But no springs with these pegs...no problem, lets get some tools and wire and make our own!
"But why do I need springs Mr. Outdoorgb?" Springs make certain your pegs are down when you need them...Up is bad.

Tools: needle nose, channels, fencing pliers (or what ever)...12mm deep socket
Materials: .062" stainless steel weld wire (I use 17-4). Welding shop, get at least two. Heck, grab more. Stuff is useful.

The instructions and pics are for the brake (right) side...same deal for left side but the BIG HOOK around the peg and LITTLE HOOK around the peg mount are mirrored. Read that again, or, since you bought plenty of wire...you'll figure it out.

Put the 12mm deep socket in vice and hold one end with vice grips. Leave about two inches beyond the vice grip
Make four wraps around the socket
Take a look at my pics...put the spring on the peg and see how to bend over the foot peg
Bend it over, trim, file to avoid boo-boos
Now, put that bad boy into the peg mount and put in the pin...don't put the clip back yet
See how the long end of the wire needs to come up and over the mount
Thread this up and use the needle nose to add some spring tension
Pull over and down
Trim and file
Hey, put the clip back onto the pin...

Left side? Rinse and repeat. If my instructions suck, likely, try again with the spare wire you bought, or, Google it...may be a video out there.

I was limited on what I could upload...few more pics of finished product.

These pegs are really nice, cast metal. Great foot hold for standing up while riding. No noticeable increase in vibes on the foot...Hell, I run them on KLR's....I know vibes.

Thanx for the pix and write-up. Only last week, I turned a bonnet catch spring for my neighbor's LDV.

Have you done this before?
I would think that the non spring steel will just bend when the peg bends up a few times, but keep us posted on this solution please. Good peg springs are hard to find.

This is my third set. The others are on KLR650's and going strong at 5 and 2 years. No issue with spring degradation. They spring back like day one.
Good point though...Make certain there are four good wraps and the threading up and over are followed.

The material you use is like tig filler wire?

Stainless steel filler rod is not spring steel but it is not mild steel either. it is pretty far from mild steel. 4 wraps of ss filler rod should do what 2 wraps of spring steel do. I have used ss filler rod for other projects.

Perfect, I will pick some up this afternoon and do this on the weekend. The springs in my pegs are completely shot, and I'm leaving on a big trip with lots of offroad in a couple weeks so this is perfect timing!

In my case, I made use of a recovered spring steel, from an old box magazine. That's an interesting tip, making use of a stainless filler rod. Something to keep in mind, if no spring steel on hand.
For info, piano / music wire makes the best springs.

I did this last night, it seems great so far and took all of 15 minutes once I got the wire. I used 316 because it was the easiest available. I'm going to be spending plenty of time dropping my bike on an upcoming trip I am taking, so I'll report back on the suitability of the 316.

Go to a hobby shop and look at their K&S rack. K&S http://ksmetals.com make and sell a wide range of spring steel wire http://ksmetals.com/17.html (music wire as we call it modelling). (I've still got tubes of the stuff from when I used to sell aeromodelling products. They make lots of other very useful stuff like aerofoil shaped, square, round, and other shaped tubing in aluminium and brass.)

Wait....I used the oem peg springs and just drilled a shallow indexing hole for the spring leg....worked perfect on those same type of off road peg.

Ok, my final review is that this does work pretty well. I had an issue and I originally thought the new spring had simply given up, but I only had to bend the end at the mount back around. On a Vee the peg mounts are thicker than the mounts above and if you don't make a good sharp bend, after a few fold cycles the wire tends to bend at the side of the mount. On the peg mounts in the photos above it would be a lot easier to make the bends sharp, and it would put more direct force on the wire to hold it. You can see in the photo below that I got lazy on the bend on the pictured side. When I rebent them, I made sharper bends and it worked better. If I re-do it, I would make sure to make good sharp bends, and also make that side longer and wrap it around the mount and back up, so it had more resistance to that issue.

With all this peg talk I'll throw this out there too. Pegs from the DR650 fit Stroms as well. I have them on my K5 Vee. I reused the stock springs which don't fit tightly, but they will return the peg to "flat" position. They do rattle if your feet aren't there, but that don't bother me none.
