So after my terrible experience dealing with Happy Trails that you can read about in the "Dealers and Vendors" section if you like. I am still looking for a good source for footman loops to attach to my Jesse panniers. Anyone know of a good source?

BTW, I will never do business with Happy Trails again if I can help it.

Cancel that question. I had barely hit hit the "submit" button when Jesse called be back and said they carry the footman loops (you just have to look under the KTM1190 section). They are being sent tomorrow. Now that is good service!

Now I have to find somewhere other than Happy Trails to order a tail rack for my KLX300. That's tough because they seem to be the only vendor who makes one.

You could have a friend order the rack for you so as not to technically violate your sworn oath... :fineprint:

After getting nothing but dumb looks at several hardware stores, I just ordered a bag of 10 stainless steel footman loops from some random seller on fleaBay.

Naturally, the following week I wandered into a different hardware store at random to look for something else, and there on the wall was an impressive display of footman loops in assorted sizes and materials... :headbang:

That's funny because I got the same dumb stares when I asked about footman loops. Huh? What the hell is a footman loop?

Although I have to be honest and say I had to use google to look up what those "metal tabs you attach tie-downs too" were called.

I knew what a footman's loop was, but I didn't know where the word came from so after seeing this thread I checked into it and learned that a footman's job was to run beside the carriages of nobility and ensure that it was not overturned by such obstacles as ditches or tree roots.

I suppose those carriages must have had a loop of some sort to help the footman hang onto the carriage, thus footman's loop.

But what I can't figure out is where they found people with such small feet.

I was installing footman loops on my F650's top case some years back (when we had babies) and my wife comes out and asks what I am doing. I explain that I am installing lash points to tie down my tent and sleeping bag. She says "you're not going anywhere" and walks back in the house. :furious:

That's freakin' funny! Unfortunately, I often still hear the same thing from mine. I've tried to talk to her about planning a trip back to Alaska, and every time I bring up the subject, she just says "you're not going back to Alaska" and changes the subject......:headbang:

McMaster-Carr has them in 1", 1 1/2" and 2" sizes - both zinc-plated and stainless steel.

I went to Home Depot and bought some stainless steel handles. They work great on my top box.

Oh maybe these are aluminum, anyways, they are strong and do not rust. Rubber washers keep water out.
