My friends and I, are planning a trip starting Sept 9th leaving Miami and catching up the auto train to Washington DC. From there, we would like to visit the region, that's mean, Pennsylvania, Virginia and possibly West Virginia, the blue ridge parkway, North Carolina and down to the Smoky Mountain for a return back to Florida.
Any suggestion on routes, scenery, point of interest to visit. We are planning to visit Gettysburg and the Amish Country in PA for a little bit of history.
Look forward to your recommendation and advise.

Thanks.

If your leaving DC the most scienic way would to be to cross into Virginia and take the George Washington Parkway north along the Potomac River. You get to pass by CIA HQ and then you can continue up North past Great Falls and on up towards Leesburg crossing the Potomac at Point of Rocks back into Maryland. You can then take Rt 15 north towards Gettyburg. There are a million ways out of DC but I think that is one of the most Scenic.

Thanks for the reply. We slightly changed the itinerary and will not be taking the train. Instead, we will ride the entire trip, coming from the South. Therefore, we will be coming from the Blue Ridge Parkway to Gettysburg and Lancaster where we would like to get a bit of the Amish culture. Then, we want to go South to Norfolk and follow the coast line all the way to Georgia. Any suggestion on crossing Virginia?
Thanks.

Not real sure of that area. I can tell you this if you head north and hit Harpers Ferry or even a little futher west you can cross the Potomac at Shepardstown and visit the Sharpsburg / Antidiem battlefield on your way to Gettysburg. If you do that there are all kinds of neat little road across the mountains to Gettysburg. Sorry I am not much help here, hopefully a Virginia or West Virginia Stromtrooper can help you out. Is Gettysburg the furthest North that you are going? If so I can give you some advice going back South and East down past Baltimore, DC and onto the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia if you want to go that way or down the western side of the Chesapeake Bay to RT17 in Virginia to take that down to Newport News area.

We won't go further than Gettysburg and the Lancaster area. Then, we will go south to reach Norfolk and then follow the coast line. Thanks for any advice.

If you make it to East Tenessee on your way give us a shout. We are 30 min from the Smokys and about the same from Deals Gap aka "The Dragon".
We probably gonna stay at the Ironhorse in Stecoah, NC, on Sept 10 & 11 and depart the following day for the Blue Ridge Parkway.
