Ironmorph, Pinkman, Ive also, considering a trip out to the Western National Parks next. summer. I went to Escalante,Bryce,Arches, and the Grand Canyon 5 years ago. We took 3 weeks from Tampa via motorhome. The distance is so great that we had only a few hours at each park. Just wondering what the cost would be to ship the bikes to Las Vegas and Fly out. Mo, Kan, and Eastern Colorado are totally forgettable , just, miles and miles of nothing,That would save almost 5 days of hard grind just to get there. Its early, we have almost a year to plan a trip. Other Ideas are welcome. When I spoke to Clem i mentioned Yellowstone, Its on my bucket list Curt

Hey Curt. Good idea on the new thread. Several years ago I had to ship a broken BMW back from Missoula, Montana back to Florida. This was before the gas prices went up so high. At that time the price for a one-way trip was over $1100.00 through Allied-Federal. Around Sturgis Rally time there are groups who ship their bikes out and I'm sure you could find a good deal at that time.

Just a thought guys, this summer I had planned to ride from Utah to Alabama. While I was on my trip and had made it as far as South Dakota, my situation changed and I had to be in Alabama ASAP, so we rented a U-haul, tossed three bikes in and booked it to 'bama. I think the total cost of the truck + gas was under $1500. Divided by three and that isn't bad.

After our time in Alabama we rode home so the trip was not lost.

Thanks for starting the thread Curt. I have a strong attraction to Glacier NP and the Canadian Rockies for the summer of 2010. I am thinking maybe in the month of August/ September. Now all this talk about tralerin, nah say it ain't so. I ride through each state, enjoying each, even the flat straight ones. It's a meditative state of mind.

I like to plan in advance, having a place to stay in the eves. In the past, I have gone with folks with varying degrees of tolerance for riding, therefore, as a ride develops, everyone can ride at their own pace, meeting at a base camp each day. Allows for lots of latitude if one chooses and no hard feelings.

Sounds like a real fun time. I'm in for sure!

Now who's next?

Shipping A Bike

There is a website where truckers bid on your shipment.

I had a bike shipped from NY to Wisconsin $595.

A BMW 1100rtp shipped from NC to Ct. $480

Tuscon to NY $495.

I'm sure there would be a significant discount for more than one bike.

I will look up the shipper and post.

DIY trailer, anyone?

For $300, you can buy a trailer at Harbor Freight, then add some rails and you have a fine two-bike hauler. If you plan carefully, it can haul three, with one riding backward in the middle.

I have hauled a Wee-Strom and a heavier bike with one of these, and never had a problem.

So all you need is a parking spot for the car and trailer at the place where dullness ends and the fun stuff begins.

As it happens, I side with Clem. The dull stuff ends when I have a Strom under me, so Nebraska and Kansas and Arizona and Saskatchewan are all fun places to ride.

But if you want to borrow my trailer, just let me know, and I am sure we can work something out.

I plan to ride from Sarasota to Vancouver BC in May, because I have a grandson there, and I would like to meet him. The idea of hauling the bike or paying to have it carried is not in my plans at all.

Best of luck, however you travel.
Keith
