I just finished my first ride on my 2008 1000 & loved it. Having only had BMW's before, imwondering what the best rev range would be. I'm used to putting along at 3k but the v seems to like more than that & nothing under. I do tend to under rev engines but don't want to strain it. At one stage on a flat I went to change down & the engine cut out on engaging the clutch, which surprised me but the silence was nice! It's got two brothers pipes & is loud. Any advice on a general rev range would be appreciated.

It either needs a power commander or has had the ECU remapped then it will be sort of happy in the 3K range.

Even remapped mine is happiest from like 3700 to 4200

You have a pipe so the stock jetting will suck worse.

There is also "chudder" and Tre mods to consider

Many have happily gone to a 100K MILES with nothing being done

The V's engine is not happy lugging around under 4k, so don't be afraid to flog it believe me it's daddy and grandfather were built for just such a heavy hand (TL/SV).

I've got a TLR and it's a wicked fun bike. The engine just begs for you to rev it. That bike is the reason I bought my Vee. See for a few years the TLR was my only reliable bike, so when vaction time came it took me to Pennsylvania and back. After that I realized I needed a more comfortable bike for traveling, but wished I could have one with the TLR engine. Well it turns out Suzuki did that. Okay it's not quite as powerful and it weighs a little more, but the engine still has the same let's GO attitude. So just give it more gas and enjoy the fun.

Don't consider this a matter of fact, only opinion.

It revs but them 500 cc Pistons are happy to propel the bike at 2800rpm. The RIDER is happy running over 4K.

Yes, I agree! Most people who say that Vstroms don't have souls must be riding the Wee.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a bit more power next time. It was sitting for some time (6 months) before I got it so might need a good blast. Has anyone used spark supressors in two brothers cans to quiet them a little. Ive now felt the weight of stock pipes & don't want that back on, but will need my hearing for some time so would like a quieter version. It's loud even with ear plugs. Bike has power com 3 in & apparently has had something put in to stop fuel issues in gears 1-3. I'll check that with previous owner. Looking to buy Caribou 40l pannier set. Anyone done or seen that set up?

I'm a new owner myself, and found this thread most useful:

DL1000 - Standard answer - low speed issues DL1000

I have done 6 out of those steps already and things have already improved significantly. TBS and TPS adjustment as well as ECM replacment (under service bulletin, no charge) is coming next week.

That said, the bike is already running WAY better then 2 weeks ago when I got it. I'm OK with riding it the way it is, but I think it will run even better next week. Maybe a power commander over the winter.

I had that thought when i posted, but then I remembered that wees outnumber vees. I didn't want to be the one to start that dog pile.
Leave it to me to start it up.

I have never ridden a Wee at all so I am unqualified to say so but hell, it is the prevailing attitude around the motorcycling world. All I know is my Vee is a blast. I can't imagine the Wee to be THAT much of a dog.

Yeah, that chugging, lurching, unpleasantness will still get the wheels rolling, but you'd have to be insane to prefer it to the smooth upper ranges where the motor makes all its power, and was DESIGNED to ride in.

But by all means, don't trust me just sit there where the bike is anemic and lifeless with a vapid grin on your face.

Since you have a copy of the Suzuki design criteria for this bike, please post! Thanks

Redline is 9,500.

Geez, spin it, Grandpa. Won't hurt nuthin'.

We have the same problem over on the vintage Suzuki GS forum -- people ride around like little old ladies chugging the things at 3,000 rpm just because they're 30 years old. Spin 'em -- that's where the power and fun is, and it won't hurt a thing. Suzuki makes VERY tough engines.

Redline on a GS850 is 9,000 rpm...

I'm not scared to spin em, but, when needed. I have no illusion that because I like the sound of it at 4000 rpms that that is where it was 'designed' to be ran at and to tell somebody new to the bikes that as a fact is a dis-service.

Maybe folks haven't ridden a big bore single dirt bike. The V-strom is basically two of those together.

Do I enjoy it running 4k plus and how it runs there? ABSO F'n LUTELY. Do I know that it is pointless to have it doing that to go 60mph down the road? YUP. It's a twin. If you want four cylinder smooth, get a four cylinder.

My experience is that the bike will run reasonably below 4k rpm as long as the load is quite low - relatively small throttle openings and/or lower gears. In higher gears and at larger throttle openings, the engine is definitely lugging and not smooth at those lower rpms. For riding when I might want to go full throttle at any time, I'll typically keept it in the 4k to 8k range. For trickling along at a steady speed, below 5th gear, I may let it drop to lower rpms for a more relaxed feeling.
