Frequent lurker, infrequent poster...

For those interested, I posted a first impression blog on the 2x2 Cycles Motorcycle Bike Rack over on the Dirt Rag site.

Would love to hear feedback from other 2x2 users for the final print review of the product. Let me know your thoughts, good, bad, or otherwise.

Few teaser pics...

Oh, this is so cool. I have way more bicycles than motorcycles, and I have been pondering a way to transport one of my mountain bikes to the trailhead on my Wee.

I just saw one this morning on a KLR 650 parked at the same motel I spent the night. Had Nevada plates and the motel was in Springerville AZ close to the AZ/NM line.

interesting

I have been researching motorcycle bike racks for a while.
This 2x2 system seems to be one of the only ones on the market.

I read the DritRag write up about this and it seems like a great product.

The one concern I have is the amount of weight off the back of the bike and the long term stress from the torsional weight of the bicycle trying to pull the motorcycle rack up.
I wonder if there is a way to mount both wheels up next to the front fork to keep some of that weight over the motorcycle?

Any comments or thoughts on this matter would be appreciated. Might have to rig up my own wheel system to achieve this?

I do like the idea of making the Givi plate along with the 2x2 rack. I will be using the Givi plate way more for my top case, but dont want to change things out every time. I will have to look at my Givi plate and see if it will work like yours did.

Thanks for the write up, i will follow along with this thread.

Hanging weight far from the motorcycle's center of gravity is dangerous. The tail wants to wag the dog. Keeping speeds and maneuvering sedate and adding a Scotts steering stabilizer can help, but I wouldn't do it. Worse things have been done successfully though. Do you feel lucky?

I saw this set-up on the back of a little scooter a while back:jawdrop:....I laughed quite uncontrollably.

This actually doesn't look too bad though. The motorcycle is a lot bigger, and it much heavier.

Though I agree with Greywolf, I would imagine a good aluminum bike (many can weigh only a few pounds), would do very little to change the COG on the bike. When you have a 400+ lb bike plus a 180 (ahem 200 lb) pounder sitting on top of it...5-10 lbs on the back really isn't going to affect much. Sure, the fact that it is so far back means that the 5-10lb is more like 30-50 lbs at the luggage rack...but that's still much less than some will put on the luggage rack.

I wouldn't recommend a wal-mart bike though :) Bike would probably fall apart anyways.

Hi
Im not sure I'm allowed to post links to other forums, but I asked a question there and no one answered :(...
I'd like to get a 2x2 rack to put a downhill or dirtjump bike and also keep my Givi E55 top case (run one or the other, not at the same time :)
How long does that arm stick out of the back?
I think it's telescoping

Looks like someone did that here

I'm looking to do something similar with my 2004 strom
I live in SF, and park it on the street (w/o bicycle of course :)
- rack a downhill mountain bike 20mm axle (occasionally)
- also use my Givi E55 top case (left on most of the time to store helmets) and be able to attach/remove it easily (no tools)
- Have the long arm that sticks off the back of the 2x2 rack come off when not being used (does half of it telescope/remove already?, space is a premium in city)
- perhaps get the 2x2 Adventure Luggage Rack /Tray to bring a gear bag of stuff (for mountainbiking)

I don't have side cases (or rack for side case yet), want to keep the bike narrow for lanesplitting

Thinking a 2x2 rack
Suggestions, thoughts ?
Thanks in advance

I personnally have one on my Wee.

Goods: Solid steel construction. Pretty well laid out for what you are getting. Stable. adjustable for different bikes. Comes with everything you need (including additional relocatable LED brake lite to wire in (your stock one is kind of hidden). Lockable forkmount (secure)

Bads: Eliminates trunk capabilities, crosswind sail issues (pass semi's with caution), pricey, the front lip should have been bent up with the same bungie/net mounting holes. You get in a lot of people's pictures that they post online - usually with an "I thought I've seen everything" tag.

Some mods I did on mine after the first couple days: reflective tape everywhere (most people see the moto, but the bike sticking 4 feet out the back - not so much), LED that came with it can be installed with the license plate - I moved it down lower in the fender and permanently wired it in (can see it in side view). I welded some nuts on the underside of my racks so I can unscrew the rack with 4 screws and put on trunk rack with same hardware.

As far as "loading" and weight distribution issues:
1) It will DEFINITELY create a "tail wagging" affect if you do not put on the load distributing strap (goes from rear pegs, wrap over bike stem, and back down.). Cinched down - it shifts the entire CG of the bike to the fron forks (if I forget to secure the cranks down at the middle, the rear wheel will raise up and the bike will levitate and rotate around the front axle).
2) MTB weighs close to 30lbs, plus rack - and with CG shifted as above - it would be worse to haul around another human on the rear seat ~ 8" further forward!.
3) Crosswinds suck - no way around that. Pass semi's with conviction.

Let me know if there is anything else you were wondering.

Don't know if they have 20mm axle option - only they can confirm.
Yes, the rear tube will telescope/collapse, but not a lot (down to 2/3 original)
You might be able to rig something up for your Givi - but my trunk is too big to go under the downtube (already tried). I have side cases - so everything goes there (you dont, so maybe a pack on the pillion seat). I wish the area under the bike downtube was setup a little better (more lash points - but remember - that is even more weight further back on the moto rack).

Holey shit - that specific article is what made me purchase my rack! I was thinking about it/designing one/etc for quite a while. Then I opened the dirtrag with a strom and a yeti and was on the phone the next morning ordering mine~!:grin2:

Man, I'm not sure where you buy your bikes, but the best $10,000+ bikes in the world weigh 14-15 pounds. A downhill mountain bike weighs in the 35-40 pound range. My bike weighs 16½ pounds (full carbon) and I would not want it hanging off the back of my Vstrom like a rudder. I'll keep my Spandexed ass hidden in the car for now.

Hi
I got this and the install (with topcase) isn't completed yet
Nor have I mounted up a bike on it yet
Have others with 20mm thru axle front bicycle wheels figured out how to mount the front wheel?
I've called and email Garret (owner of 2x2) but he hasn't gotten back yet
In the meantime I've ordered some nelson rigg 855 (soft) saddlebags

Probably going to have to get the 9mm/20mm adapter. Several companies make them, some better than others.

do a search for "9mm 20mm bike rack adapter" into google.

Got the topcase installed with a lot tinkering
and a whole bunch extra bolts and nuts (bought at hardware store and need to return unused)
I needed to drill 2x2 top plate a bit
Used m6 bolts, (4 for each mount), ideally thinking m8

so the 2x2 stays on the bike and the top case removes when you put the bike on ?

thanks for being the guinea pig:)
