Hey all.

Was just starting to install my new Fiamm air horn. Removed the wires from the old horn, getting ready to install them to a relay. So I tried out just the stock wires on the new horn and it worked great. Loud as all hell. Now I'm wondering if I really want to go through the hassle of installing that relay, running a new wire to the battery, etc.

Has anyone tried to run a Fiamm without a relay for some time? Would like to hear what the results are.

It's my understanding that the horn will work without the relay the problem is that you may burn out the wiring in the switch or elsewhere in the system.

It might work, but is probably drawing considerably more current than the components in that circuit were designed to sustain reliably. In particular, the horn switch might not not last long under those conditions, and it costs more than a relay. :)

As the other members have already stated, you do not want to run such a high amp device through the stock wiring. Something somewhere will most likely fry, and that would suck. Do the job right and install the relay. You want the power drawn directly from the battery (fused, of course, either inline or through a fuse block), try to avoid running any electrical farkles through the stock wiring.

what rating

thanks for the replies - i will install the relay. how many amps should the inline fuse be? the manual didn't specify. and do i get the power from the battery's main terminal or is there a more convenient place?

Look at the maximum current rating (amperage draw) for the horn, then get the fuse that is the closest size higher. That's assuming you are using the wiring that came with the horn, or at least wiring that is the size recommended by the horn manufacturer.

Can't speak to the power tap location; haven't added any electrical goodies to this bike yet. On my old GS1000, the terminal/lug on the factory fuse box that connects to the battery is much more convenient to use than the battery terminal.

I realize this is an old thread, but it would be interesting for someone with a larger horn hooked up without a relay to press the flash-to-pass switch and press the horn at the same time. The Wee horn is fed from the power to the flash-to-pass switch, and (if on low beam) the above is done - two headlights will be on with both hi and low beams on, and the horn on, it would likely blow the fuse? It may even do this with the stock horn?

The horn is fed off the high beam fuse on both bikes, whether the high beams are actuated by the flash to pass button or the high/low switch. The low beams have a separate fuse.
