Few questions as I set out to start shopping around. Mostly looking used, but the wife is warming up to buying new if I can't find anything worthwhile.

Mileage: just about every used one I've found has 40-60k miles and go for $4k+, regardless of age. Are these reliable into the higher mileage? (It seems absurd when a local dealer is advertising brand new 2016s for $6400.)

Suspension: my old SV650 was sprung really light (135lbs rider) and was a really horrible ride until I reworked the suspension. Do the WeeStroms suffer the same issue?

Ideally I'd like to find a used bike in the $3-4k range. Is there any significant improvement in the second gen that would be worth the extra money?

40-60k isn't high mileage for these bikes. 240-260k is.

My 2007 DL650 was sprung just fine for my weight. I got was to 230lb before dropping a bunch of lard. It was fine at that. Some people like to put a fork brace on them. I never felt the need.

The second gen motors a slightly more fuel efficient, but the put a slightly smaller tank on them. The newer instruments have some extra toys in them, and I suspect there's a better horn.

Take your time and you find a fair deal on an older bike, often the sellers are including some cost related to upgrades/farkles they added. If these do not appeal to you, it could make the bike too costly for your needs.

If you cannot find an older bike that suits your need/cost, it is hard to beat a new one that comes with a warranty fairly cheap. Just my 2 cents. Of course with tax you are only getting about half that.

They're darned good bikes. They hold value.

That said, last year at about this time of year I sold my '07 Wee with a fresh valve adjust and in good condition (needed tires) for $2500. Just a data point for you. I sold to a friend and that price is about the lowest I've seen for a good / running Wee.

really? Wow that seems cheap. I suspect theres gonna be some surcharges to get that out the door.

Did you see this one? Gets you a little above your price range i guess.
I spotted that one earlier today, when I get back home from business I will definitely try to take a look at it.

I'm sure that dealer is going to tack on all sorts of charges, but who knows, sometimes they just want inventory gone.

The factory suspension is as good as your SV. I just got a shock redone by Sasquatch. Much mo bettah. At the 85K mark it was more than tired, it was comatose.
Some guys let the bike go for Blue Book and others fetch a higher price. It's your diligent shopping that makes the difference.

Sorry to sort of resurrect this old thread....

I'm now in the market for a new bike. My old one was a 30 year old cruiser, which was great until it up and died and wasn't worth the work to repair.

I'm new to riding, and knew that the cruiser life wasn't mine anyway. I much preferred and upright / standard riding position, and really like the utility and comfort that something like the V-Strom / Versys / 500X provide. So all that said...

There are few Versys or 500x's in the used market here in Vancouver. I know, patience. However, the sheer volume of V-strom 650s available in my market is astounding, especially fully farkled. I can bide my time on those as well, but I would like to purchase sometime this winter.

Can anyone give some advice on the best bets? I would prefer ABS, which I think was standard on Canadian models from (ummm... thinking...) 2010 or 2011 (with the US).or 2013. Are there any other things to really be aware of on older models? I have scoured through the DL650 Through the Ages post over on vstrom.info, but am just wonering what year to have as my floor. I'm thinking anything from a 2007-2013, but admittedly I'm... well.... new (see above).

Thanks for the patience with a n00b (so much so that I can't post links yet...!).

Noob! Welcome. I've owned a versys and currently own a strom 650. I can't say much for the newer years, but mine is an 04 that I picked up for $2500 a year ago. It currently has over 30K miles, and have had no issues. Changed the oil and tires, and have started taking it offroading with my friend who has a mx bike. Fun times. I can't keep up or climb all the hills but it can handle most things given enough time (the deeps sand is rough though...). If I were to only ride on the road, I would go for the versys. That thing would roll on wheelie no problem, great riding position, very comfortable, and zippy. I've heard that a smaller sprocket on the strom will do similar things, but I already find myself wanting another gear on the freeway. So my next upgrade was going to be a larger front sprocket (lower torque, higher top speed). Can't comment on the Honda, but I think they are all great bikes, and like always, buy as much bike as you can afford!

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to spend the winter searching. I had resolved to the Versys for a time (love the green and the orange), but the more reading I do, the more I like the Wee. That, and the sheer number of used ones with low KMs around are going to probably be what does it for me.

If you hold off untilo after the new year you may find a dealer or two that really wants to reduce their inventory. I got a great deal on a '15 Glee last January when the dealer was trying to reduce their inventory.
