where in the world did that phrase come from? And is it the best we can do? Personally, I don't want to call anything on my bike a farkle. It sounds like a combination of fart and sparkle. I may add a GPS one day, but I sure won't call it a farkle. I'll call it a GPS. Good night.

From a google search - Farkle

The term Farkle apparently originated among the ST1100 riders. It is an acronym:

F.ancy
A.ccessory
R.eally
K.ool &
L.ikely
E.xpensive
From the 2 Wheel Innovations web site:

Farkle:
N: An Accessory intended to improve or embellish the original system; opulent luxury item;
V: to add pleasure or comfort; to strut about after adding additional items to stock unit thus improving value or performance, usually saying "whoo-hoo" loudly to yourself or your neighbors.
As defined by the ST1100 owners' club, a farkle is:

1. (Noun) any modification to one's motorcycle.
2. (Verb) the act of modifying one's motorcycle in some way.
Farkles may have functional or merely aesthetic value, or in fact no value whatsoever! To farkle is to expand one's connection to the motorcycle, to enhance its uniqueness, and provide a venue for personalization.

I believe the origin of Farkle is...

Functional
Accessories,
Really
Kool,
Likely
Expensive.....

Gotta Love 'Em!!

I had my last bike (SV650) for 7 years with nary a Farkle...

...I had seven years worth of Farkles ordered before I even took delivery of my Wee-Strom!

Seems drought conditions are to blame. Bear kills human...bear is tracked down and killed.
Humans alter climate - climate change kills bears. Bears kill humans.

If only some other animals would take in and follow the bears!

I thought it was short for "Functional Sparkle" meaning an add-on that has a function, not just for looks (like a lot of cruiser stuff).

The word farkle is a funny word, granted.

But the fact remains that there was a need for the word.

Look how heavily it's used on this site... it's a noun, verb and adjective.
The concept of the motorcyclist doing something to enhance his machine over and above the stock form of the bike... is something rather inherant to the culture.

In that void slipped the word "farkle." And thus all new words are born.

Like it or not.

The Killington rally where Farkle originated was the first of the neSToc (north east ST owners club) rallys. I remember the discussion on the ST list about who/where it was first used. Then there were the spelling threads, Farkle or Farkel, that would pop up from time to time.

"The word "Farkle, or Farkel", started at an ST1100 rally in 1997 held in
Vermont. A fellow by the name of Pete Wells, the organizer, arranged prizes
for various categories. One category was for the ST with the most
aftermarket bits and pieces. This isn't chrome stuff like you would find on
Gold Wings, rather, we are talking functional items like throttlemeister,
high intensity lamps, etc. Items which don't add to the appearance, just
add functionality. This is the important aspect; it can't be junk from the
doo dad isle at Wal Mart or Autozone. I was at the event and at the banquet
Pete explained the lack of a good name to call the functional item category
so he came up with the name "Most Sparkeling Farkeled ST". I recall it was a
half acronym and half word put together but can't remember which ones.

I recall we chuckled at the banquet about the word Pete made up and I'm sure
nobody would have guessed the use would grow legs but I now hear it used on
all sorts of different motorcycle forums and there is now a company called "Farklemasters".

I do not like the word Farkle. There are way to many questionable words used on the V-strom sites, products with weird names. These include:

Speedohealer - for one thing I do not wear a speedo, and if any thing need healing in that area I sure would not tell a bunch of guys on motorcycles.

Loobman - Ok, this is british, but still who wants to squeeze the loobman? When properly squeezed it squirts thick goop out (in its case typically 80-90w oil).
