I've been looking at new V-strom 650s and I got a quote from a dealer on a new 2011 ABS 650 for $7600 including dealer prep, shipping and setup fees. $7000 for the bike, $600 in dealer fees.

Is this a decent price. I guess list is $8100 (+ dealer prep etc.). I've no idea if the V-strom is usually discounted or not. I know some bikes sell at the sticker price (or even higher), depending on supply and demand but I've no idea what the 2011 V-strom 650 ABS usually sells for.

Since it's a new bike I could shop around a few more dealers I guess but I'd appreciate any comments on what price range I should expect. I'm in NJ if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

The bike cost the dealer 6990. They get paid from Suzuki to put it together. The lowest I had heard of is 7300 +tax. Work from their.

I paid 7,800 OTD
At the end of the day a few hundred for what you want isn't that big of a deal. I took advantage of the 1.9% financing instead of paying cash. At the end of five years that’s under 500.00 in interest. In financing terms "free money" to be able to have cash in case of an emergency/invest that money in a high yield account. In today’s economy it helps strengthen your credit score giving you a better advantage later.
Plus remember the dealership needs to make something on the transaction or your favorite dealership will not stay in business.

OTD price

When you say OTD does that include taxes and title? They differ from state to state of course. Sales tax would be around $530, titke around $60 and registration around $60 making a true "OTD" price of $8250 for NJ.

What I might try to do is see if the dealer will throw in a farkle or two, like a centerstand and maybe a larger screen. I assume they get a decent discount on those from Suzuki, so they might be willing to deal on at least one of them.

I'd agree though that a couple of hundred dollars isn't a big difference once you get to $8K for the bike.

I'd be quite happy with a low mileage used bike in good shape, but all the ones I've seen so far for sale locally have been non-ABS and that's something I'd like to have. I may never need it, but if I ever do I'm sure I'll be very glad I have it!

Yes 7800 was the total price including tax, tags, processing, blood donation, my first born and the big smile on my face. 8200 OTD seems high if you can add in the 1k Suzuki discount.
If you wanted to get another quote look up Village Motorsports in Unionville VA. That’s where I went and I know they ship bikes too. One was bought over the phone when I was there and being delivered to Ohio. They also gave me discounts on other things too.

...8200 OTD seems high if you can add in the 1k Suzuki discount...

$1000 discount? I know they had some sort of $1000 off coupon scheme earlier in the year but I wasn't aware of any current program. One dealer I called suggested checking later in the week to see if there were any discount programs announced in July. Don't know if he had "heard something" or just wanted me to call back since his quote was a little high ($8150 plus fees!).

$1000 from Suzuki that was offered earlier this year did not apply to the V-Strom. The inventory levels on these bikes are relatively low across the country and they sell well enough that Suzuki does not have to discount them (dealer cash or consumer cash).

I considered buying a new 2011 in white and ended up at around $7800 OTD (6% state tax and dealer fees). But ended up finding a used 09 with ABS with almost $1k farkles for around $1500 less.

If I were you, I'd wait for a 2012... unless you really like the current look.

I suspect it will be a while before the 2012 model hits the dealers. As far as I know they haven't even announced a "list" price on it yet. There don't seem to be enough improvements to justify waiting 3 or 4 months and paying more (I assume the price is much more likely to go up then to go down!).

I'm still looking for a lightly used 650 ABS, but they seem to be thin on the ground around here. There are 3 or 4 non-ABS bikes for sale at dealers and through private sales around, but not at prices exceptional enough to make me consider a non-ABS bike. Of course I've never actually owned an ABS bike, but it seems like such a good idea I'd hate to pass it up. For $500 the added security of stopping in the wet seems well worth the cost.

Pulled the trigger

Well, I did it. After two or three rounds of price negotiations with several dealers I finally negotiated a price of $8000 out of the door including NJ taxes (7%) fees and tags. 2011 ABS in white. Picking it up on Saturday.

I think it's a pretty decent price and it's from the dealer I liked best. All I need to do now is start ordering farkels. I think the first two will be a frame/engine guard (just in case...) and a centerstand. Probably the Givi guard and the Motech center stand. Not quite decided how big/small a topbox to get yet. Big is good because it holds a lot, but smaller is also good since it might look better and have less drag plus it's not a great idea to load them up too heavy anyway. Any advice on that one?

Just bought a DL 650

I just purchased a new 2011 V-Strom 650 for $7843.10 OTD. That really did include everything including 7% sales tax. I live in the Atlanta area, found a dealer in Charlotte with the best price I could find and kept calling dealers in the area until I got one to match the price - or nearly match it. It would have cost $100 to drive to Charlotte and back.

Also got the Suzuki promotion saddlebags for another $199 + tax.

Maybe they will do an incentive on the left over 2011's.

I was talking to a dealer today who said the Suzuki rep said this year has been the worst sales year for Suzuki ever-- even worse than last year. He said he had placed his usual yearly order for 2012s by the deadline but Suzuki canceled the order and said they would let him know when to order the new models.

He has most of his inventory on hand from 2011, and is not optimistic for next year's sales.

I hope to give him some business.

Around here you can currently find 2011 DL650s for 6949+ TTL which should put you right at 7500 OTD. The title and plate fees are around 100 bucks and that 6949 includes all dealer fees.

My favorite dealer is about 300 more than that but I'd probably go there anyway as I really can't stand the place with the better price. I'd rather pay a couple hundered more and support a guy I really like than save money buying for an asshat.

Would love to speak with you

Hello Bob A,

I am also interested in purchasing a 2011 V Strom 650 ABS. Can you tell me where you received the best price in NJ? I had a 1996 Honda Shadow ACE, but it was totaled last week by a careless teenage driver that pull out in front of me. I was impressed with the V Strom 650 at my local Suzuki dealer in Sussex, NJ.

Thanks, Scott
