After agonizing like crazy over which bike to get I think it's going to be a new V-Strom 650.
Figured that an engine guard, radiator guard and skid plate are a good idea. Anything other recommendations or recommendations on exactly what brands/models of those three items to get? Nothing performance-oriented - just safety and comfort for 2-up/100% all road.
Thanks and this'll be my first road bike after a lot of motocross.

consider things like mirror extenders , heated grips, etc, you may not need em, or they may make your ride so much more pleasurable if you have to contort your body to see past your shoulders.

I find I use my heated grips as much in the summer on a cool evening or morning but still wearing lightweight gloves, or in a cool rain when gloves get soaked.

I swapped out the stock footpegs for a used set that came from a Goldwing, they are larger with more bearing surface for your feet when you stand or even lift yer ass off the seat

handlebar pull backs or risers... or an entire different handlebar altogether

For comfort, a better seat and windshield were essential for me. For comfort and safety, better suspension.

for me a couple things like saddlebags and a centerstand were a necessity. years ago I added a side stand foot and was surprised at how it took the ? out of parking on softer surfaces. sidestand down and walk away.

the list is endless. must haves for one are not must haves for all.

headlight relay is important preventable medicine though. don't find out too late like many here do.

Depending on your height, you may need an aftermarket windscreen, as many of us on here have experienced some pretty bad buffeting and wind noise. See the sticky on the subject for suggestions. And welcome to the forum!

I’ve added numerous farkles to my ‘17, but the two that I think are most essential are the centerstand (SW Motech...I recommend it highly), and the awesome Givi Airflow adjustable windscreen.

If you plan on riding more than a couple hours at a time, a new seat. New windscreen, Givi or Madstad. Definitely a center stand. Long legs? Peg lowering kit. Headlights relay a must, from Eastern Beaver. Personally, I would put all these things ahead of the 3 items you mentioned: skidplate, engine guard, radiator guard - especially since you mention 100% road use.

Top case and aux. lights are awfully nice to have too. Inexpensive 10 watt LEDs are a safety item for day and night riding.

I'm pretty much in the same situation as the OP. 70% V-Strom 650 ABS vs. Kawasaki Versys 650 ABS. My immediate add ons based on needs will be:
1.) Givi PLR side racks
2.) Kappa K40 side bags
(use my existing Givi Monokey universal plate/Givi 56L top case)
3.) Hand guards
5.) Heated grips/grip covers (pre-existing)
6.) Mirror extenders
7.) Peg lowering kit
8.) Handlebar risers
9.) Skid plate ( just looks too vulnerable w/out one)
10.) Aux LED lighting (pre-existing from prior bike)
11.) Swingarm spools

I'll try my existing variable windscreen extender on the stock shield before purchasing a windshield. I'll also try the stock seat before purchasing an aftermarket. I do have a Air Hawk seat pad to try for longer rides. When funds come available, a McCruise cruise control unit. I'll also likely need some minor suspension upgrades but I'll decide that after some quality riding time ...

Ride the bike for awhile before farkeling.

Ergos were the first thing I addressed.

I'm a long time dirt bike rider and the OEM riding position was goofy for me. Swapped out the bars for some with less sweep (CR high) used ROX risers to get them up and back. Adventuretech peg lowering kit helped with leg room. Much more comfy to ride and standing up is doable without the bars in my lap feel of the stock stuff.

I'm with Spec. Ride it and it will tell you what needs attention.

I agree with Spec and the others. What to do as mods is an entirely personal thing. Some riders find the bike perfect off the showroom floor. Others have to finagle and tweak a bit to get it dialed into their liking's. The two basic categories of mods to my thinking are the comfort and fit necessities, and the personal convenience options.

In terms of comfort and fit I had to tweak the bike at three points to get it right for me:

- Wind and buffeting (Augustus winglets and a Givi Airflow windshield)
- Ergos and riding position (Bar-backs)
- Seating and ground reach (Sargent low-seat)

My 2014 Adv model came with engine guards, racks and luggage, so I did very little at those points. I did add a Weld86 bash plate because I'm paranoid after seeing a fatally cracked engine case due to the rider hitting something on the road. The bash plate is cheap insurance at that point.

And like the others said, ride it a while to see what you actually need to look forward to being on the bike.

Did you have to extend the cables, wiring and clutch hose? I tried to put a set of 1" risers on and had nothing but problems so I gave up.

I changed out the OEM bars for some with less sweep and rise. I didn't have a problem with the cables. I released the front brake line from the clamp on the triple clamp to give it a bit more reach.

Others have used risers with the OEM bars, some extend the front brake line. Try routing the cables behind the top triple clamp.

I have a 96 BMW that needs some engine work but I don't have the time nor the space to do it so I was going to rob the bars off of it because they have less sweep and have access for heated grips but because I couldn't get the risers to work I never did the swap. I will have to look at giving your fix a try, thanks.
