Error code C40

3302 Views 15 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  PedroSantos
Starting my 2010 DL650 after washing it, I noticed that the engine sounded different and an FI error message showed intermittently hand the central red LED was on.

On dealer mode a C40 error code (ISC valve) is shown.

The bike is idling below 1000 rpm.

Could this problem be caused by the water ?

I've tried resetting the ISC valve with no success.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Have read the advice in C40 problem , ISC valve replacement and Rough running K9 wee ?

Still no resolution to the problem

I was working on it today.

I lifted every out to get to the ISCV, checking all the connections on the way and the state of the tubes, there was one small tube from the air box to the rear intake that was cracked and replaced it.

On the actual ISCV there was no evidence of external damage. The plug was properly connected.

I did take it apart and found a lot of oily gunk inside the metal part of the valve, on the spring and around the plastic rod inside the plastic cup inside the spring. Cleaned it all out with carbcleaner. Not sure how much the plastic rod must move but it moves a bit.

I then put it all back together and the C40 error is still there. I followed the reset sequence and nothing happened.

The bike runs but idles at slightly below 1000 RPM.

I don't know when I'll be able to have a replacement valve.

Question,
- is it safe to use the bike with the error?

Still not solved.

I've asked for some help.

Meanwhile I've noticed that with the bike running in dealer mode there is a change in the position of the line in front of the C40 from the middle to the top position as I rev up the engine; towards 2000 RPM the line goes to the top, running in idle, it idles below 1000 RPM and the line is in the middle position.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I understood from reading online that the position of this line is related to RPM count in iddle (top position = high, middle position = normal, bottom position = low).

If this is the case, shouldn't this line be in the bottom position while idling below 1000 RPM?

Does that fact that there is an observable change in the line position mean that the problem is potentially in the valve and not in wiring?

Are you sure of the - sign on a C40 display and not the TPS C00 display? Typically when the "-" sign moves to the top of a C00 display, it is deemed as an indication that the TPS has been adjusted correctly at a pre-determined rpm. See TPS Adjustment on the DL 650
The C40 code as you have reported above, equates to an ISC Valve error. If I recall, the ISC is only found on 07 & Up models 650 and refers for the idle speed control. Have a look at the discussion in C40 problem and Rough running K9 wee

Here's a short video.
Hope you can see the line move up and downhttps://cloud.tapatalk.com/s/6326fcd65e1d8/VID_20220918_130704(0).mp4

Hello everyone

I still have not managed to solve the problem.

But I have identified a break in continuity of the dark brown wire going from the ICS valve to the ECM.

Any suggestions as to how to solve this problem?

Solved.

Ran a cable parallel to the wiring harness, from the ISC valve connector to the ECM connector.https://cloud.tapatalk.com/s/632efa5d628ef/VID_20220924_133326.mp4

Why would this dark brown cable fail?

It doesn't seem stretched, it doesn't pass through any moving parts, and it doesn't connect to any other part of the bike

The only way to know is to inspect the cable and see where it broke.

Could be a manufacturers defect, but in the past there have also been reports of wiring looms being routed incorrectly, or supported incorrectly, and rubbing against a sharp edge due the vibration of the bike. There have even be recalls due to this, I think.

Have you traced the whole path of the wiring loom from the ECU to the ISC connector? Any sign of damage anywhere?

I did trace it as best as I could, although I wasn't able to properly look at certain areas , and I couldn't find anything.
