Engine noise. Do I need a valve adjustment at 6,000 miles?

Recently I’m noticing a “clattering” noise at cruising speed - especially on the interstate reflecting off the median wall or other cars. Aside from the noise, the bike behaves and performs in a normal manner. When I got home and left the engine running, the sound persists. Seems to occur after warm up.

Do it need higher octane fuel? Does it need a valve adjustment? Is it loose lifters? Is this noise normal for these engines, and I’m just now noticing? Am I crazy?

My bike is a 2019 DL650 with 6,000 miles.

You won't hear valve noise at cruising speeds.
Well, you'll sure hear them at a stop I think. A valid question and I'm following this one....
The strom engine is noisy.

Changed oil and filter 400 miles ago with Ecstar r9000 full synthetic 10w40
The strom engine is noisy.

The regular valve check is soon enough.

You’re running good oil. As STCorndog said, “these are noisy engines”. Without concrete data, keep riding and monitoring. Wish I could be of more help…best of luck with it.

My engine is very quiet. I can't hear it at all with my helmet on and earplugs in.😉

What is your mph and what gear are you in when this happens. I think we are all assuming 65mph and 5k rpm. Is that right?

We are all crazy. We ride motorcycles.

Overhead cam engines tend to be a bit noisy up top, lot of stuff happening there.

Actually around 75-85 mph indicated in 6th gear. Probably 5500-6000rpm. Running 16T counter sprocket.

I thought so also, but the effect increases when revving with clutch squeezed
When you squeeze the clutch you are unloading the drive chain & gearbox, this could account for the extra noise.

Have a very good look at the front sprocket to ensure it's not hooked, they wear faster than the rear.

I’ll take a look a the front sprocket. It’s pretty new as I replaced the original with a 16T maybe 1000-1500 miles ago.

Here’s what I found in an older thread:
“Check the clutch adjustment at the motor. If the clutch actuator is too loose, the clutch pin will vibrate under hard acceleration, around 5000 rpm. It sounds like a metallic pinging noise.”

This describes the sound, however it occurs constantly - whether accelerating or not.

A few months back, I re-routed all control cables behind the triple tree (to accommodate bar risers). Perhaps the clutch actuator needs adjusting?

Could be.

From an old thread on the topic:
“Also thought it was pinging, bad gas, too low octane, etc. Issue was resolved when I replaced the factory chain with a DID one.”
I've run 87 or 89 in my 1000 since new, no pinging/noises there. The clutch assembly is a sloppily made basket of clatter, I wonder if that's the source of your noises.

Mine sounds great... but have had a 60% hearing loss since I was 6-years-old. Approching 60 so now it's just...
