Well, I'm having one hell of a time with my new Elka shock. Received my shock after about a month of waiting and was super excited when it finally arrived. I mounted it up ASAP and took it for a ride. It seemed to be a little harsh in some of the bumps and definitely added some height to the bike. I contacted John at Elka and he suggested that I check my sag and should be able to use that to adjust the ride height (not the ride height adjuster). I took my sag measurements with the help of the wife. Only 20mm sag with preload adjuster backed all the way out. With the help of the owners manual I set out to reduce preload. I was happily turning the preload collar when I noticed that it was pulling and turning the remote adjuster line at the same time. The line looked like it had become twisted so I turned it back. Now I'm worried that I had done some damage to the line and uninstalled the shock.

I was able to untwist the line and the preload adjuster appeared to be working as it should. I re-read my manual over looking for the part where it said that you can't adjust the preload collar (with remote preload adjuster) while the shock is on the bike. (It's not there BTW). I called Elka and spoke to someone who confirmed that the shock was correct for my weight. I began to question my method of measuring sag and reinstalled the shock. NO Change in measurement...:furious: I called Elka and explained what was happening. They suggested that I measure my spring length to see how much it was compressed. It is a 7" spring and it was compressed to 5 5/8". I was told that this was way too much compression and that it needed to be backed out to no more than 10mm of compression.

Removed shock again and manually turned collar so that spring now had 10mm compression. Reinstalled shock last night and sure enough the shock seems much softer now. Time to set sag. With the preload backed all the way out I am getting 65mm sag and with preload adjuster clicked full 40 clicks I am still at 45mm sag. Now too much sag with no room for additional load or passenger. I'm super frustrated at this point and will call Elka for additional instructions on Monday.

Thanks for letting me vent. I've installed the shock 3 times now and uninstalled it twice. Looks like I'll be doing both again soon.:furious:

It's all a matter of getting the spring collar in the right place. The optimum is for the sag to be correct for you alone with no added hydraulic preload. Then the hydraulic preload can be added for additional weight like a passenger and luggage. Measure the maximum amount of hydraulic preload. That amount plus 1mm added to the manual collar preload ought to do it for you.

I put my Elka on over 20,000 miles ago, It was perfect right out of the box.
I have never even touched any of the clickers. I just dial in more preload when adding weight.
Good luck getting it right, it will be worth it

Just to make sure I understand what you're saying. I should remove the shock, set the hydraulic preload to maximum compression and measure the length of the compressed spring. Unload the hydraulic preload and using the manual preload spring collar compress the spring to the measured distance +1mm additional.

Is that what your suggesting?

No. Measure the maximum opening of the hydraulic adjuster in millimeters, the difference between fully closed and fully open. Add 1mm. That's the number you will work with. Call it N. Run the hydraulic adjuster back to zero to make moving the manual ring easier. Mark the shock body at the top of the manual ring. Unlock the manual ring with the set screw and turn it down the shock body until the distance from the top of the ring to the mark is as close to N millimeters as you can get it with the hose in the proper position and lock it with the set screw . That should give you about 40mm of sag with no hydraulic preload, a good starting point. Then you can add hydraulic preload when adding a passenger and/or luggage to keep the dynamic sag at 40mm.

I just installed my Elka a couple of weeks ago. They got my preload right on the money. I am a little disappointed in the remote preload adjuster however. I can only get mine to turn about 16 clicks from the minimum setting, and that is turning it HARD. Others have told me they are able to get over 25 clicks of adjustment. I have not yet loaded the bike up with full gear and the wife to see if the 16 clicks will be enough or not. I am happy with the ride so far though.

Thanks for the info. Greywolf. Now I have a Sunday evening project.....

Jarlaxle, I have a full 40 clicks on the remote preload adjuster. Maybe that is because the spring is so relaxed at this point. That number may change as I increase the preload using the manual collar.

BTW if anyone needs a shock uninstalled/installed give me a shout. I am becoming rather proficient with the process.:headbang:

I am going to give Elka a call and see if my preload is functioning properly. If it makes you feel any better, I had to install/reinstall mine about four times before getting the ride height just where I wanted it. i.e install & check ride height... crap! ...uninstall and back it out a couple of turns and reinstall... crap! ...not enough... unistall and give it a couple of turns and reinstall... crap! ...too much ...and so on.

My experience has been that Elka supplied me with a shock that is absolutely fantastic. I gave them a detailed and accurate description of my weight riding solo....my weight + sweetheart+luggage and was sent a unit that is spot on. I am one happy Wee rider....except for the crappy forks.
