I was just having a conversation with Greywolf about fork braces and it occurred to me people might not realize how long they have been around.

I made my first fork brace for my own very first motorcycle in 1972. It was a 1973 Kawasaki G4TR, 100 cc endure with a dual range transmission. As dependent overseas I had a student job in the Subic Bay Metal Shop that summer. the fork brace certainly wasn't a new concept back then.

Anyway, that brought up the question of when did fork braces come into being? So I thought we might try to track down the earliest reference or use of a motorcycle fork brace.

The winner gets bragging rights (maybe a T-Shirt too).

This may be helpful. According to Wikipedia, the first production motorcycles with hydraulically damped telescopic forks were the German BMW R12 and R17 in 1935. However, undamped telescopic forks were used on bikes made by The Scott Motorcycle Company from the beginning of production in 1908, and the Danish Nimbus used them from 1934 on.

I take it you mean an after market fork brace, not something that came with the bike, and on telescopic forks with the inner tube on top and outer tubes below.

Either way, as part of the original equipment, after market, or home grown. I think most of the 70's dirt bike fork braces were home made. Of course "dirt bikes" were a new concept back then. Just a few years earlier people were just taking the fenders off of street bikes to ride in the dirt.

Honda has incorporated fork braces into their designs for decades. I think the 1983 Gold Wing had one right off the factory floor. Others have been incorporated into the fenders structure. Yamaha had a cast aluminum piece running across a fender that served as a fork brace.

I'll bet the fork brace came about just after the invention of the telescopic fork. Let' see if we can find a picture of a pre-WWII motorcycle with one.
