I have looked into doing the same thing. I have built many skid plates for my dirt bikes. From what I have gathered, building the plate for our bikes is not so difficult, but there is a bracket that has a 90 degree bend, and a funky off-set, that is required to bolt the rear of the plate up against the engine. That bracket appears to be the toughest part of the whole job.
You could use a piece of cardboard to cut a template for the plate itself.

Do a google search on "DIY No Weld Belly Pan", Honest Bob put it up awhile back, and I used it. Really came out nice. Mine was for a 011, so don't know if that will be a issue for you.

I used it for a guide to make one for my 2012.
Best thing is to make one out of cardboard or poster paper and get the size/shape you want, then trasfer to metal and make it.

 

Buying one from Weld86 was cheaper than buying a sheet metal break to handle some 1/8 inch diamond plate. I've got sheets of alunimum in the garage but bending it up is a problem. Good luck. I'd like to see how it turns out.
