I've had my 05 DL650 for about a month now. It's been running perfectly for the most part except for one strange thing.

The bike had 2900 miles on it when I bought it, and I've now added another 2600 miles.

I've noticed the shifting isn't always smooth. Most of the time, it seems perfect.. but it was harder to get into gear when I bought it. The clutch play was REALLY loose. After I adjusted it back to spec, it seemed perfect. But not always. Sometimes it feels harder and slightly chunkier when shifting. Then I'll stop somewhere, take off again and it'll seem fine.

This is a very nitpicking complaint because most of the time it's just fine. Just wondering if the previous owner burned a clutch plate or two?

Also, I'm coming from an 05KLR650 that pretty much always shifted about the same for 23k miles. I had to readjust the clutch play slightly every few thousand miles, but the smoothness of the shifting was pretty much consistent.

Is the DL650 just different in that regard and will shift different depending oh heat? weather? etc.? Or, is there's something causing this inconsistency?

thx.

Mine has days when the shifting isnt smooth too. Doesnt seem to be any pattern. Checking chain is at correct tension helps, and a good oil change seems to make the bike ride smoother - why?

But if you get the chain set for 25C and the temp drops the next day to 15C, everything goes to pot again.

Similar experience here. With just over 17K on the bike it does have the occasional moment when shifting up through the gears seems a bit "catchey". Go figure. I've never had any difficulty finding neutral. Overall shifting smoothness has inproved a lot with the miles. I can't remember the last time I hit the 5-6 false neutral. Some have reported improved smoothness with synthetic oil. I'm too cheap. I run Rotella dino and change it every 3000. Oh, it's also smoother the higher you rev it between shifts, so rev it up whenever possible!
