Hello, I've been lurking for a while but I think I'm about ready to join the ranks as a true V-Strom owner. But I have a question first, which one?

Here are my stats, and how I'm going to use the bike (I hope). I'm 6'1" and tip the scales at 235lb so I'm not a lightweight. I've been riding motorcycles for around 20 years, on and off road.

Now for what I want to do with the DL......
I want a bike that I can ride 2000+ miles across the country somewhere and then when I get to my destination and the roads turn to fire roads, and light to medium jeep trails I'm not afraid to just keep going. I do like to cruise around 85mph, and I do tend to pack fairly heavy so I want a bike that won't have trouble pushing my tubby butt around the countryside. I also like cornering so I'd like which ever bike I choose to be a little nimble, but weight isn't too big of a deal since I'm coming from cruisers and compared to them either Strom is a lightweight.

So what do you guys think? Which one is right for me? Thanks again for all your help, and I can't wait till I get one for myself.

Make sure you use the search function of this site and find all the past threads on this subject as this has been discussed once or twice in the past. ;) Everyone thinks their model is best so I took my cue from the folks who owned both and got the 650. I think that is where you are headed when you say "light to medium jeep trails."

Don't be concerned about power as I weigh 250 and ride two up with my wife who is around 110 and have no problems. With the ~70 horsepower the 650 is plenty fast enough and powerful enough for what you need. Either one will need a seat change to be comfortable on a 500+ mile day.

I just found out how to use the search feature. My tunnel vision completely overlooked the little picture box with the funky letters in it. That's the first time I had to verify a word to press the search button.

After doing some looking, I think I'll be staying with my 1000 wishes. The extra power will be nice to have. My wife has an SV650 and I keep thinking of how it would handle my weight plus all my luggage on a long trip. And I'd rather have the little bit of extra "get up and go" when I needed it.

Okay, so now the mods can delete this thread before yet another flame fest goes on.

I have spent a bit of time on both V-Stroms and think the 1000 would better fit your intended use but I would also advise that you gear it down 5-6 percent for those medium jeep trails. The 1000 has a very tall overdrive 6th gear and gearing it down will make the overdrive more usable and give some more low end grunt in first gear when you are off pavement.

If you drop a tooth on the countershaft the speedometer will be even more inaccurate, it would be better to add 2-3 teeth to the rear sprocket.

That could be either the Wee or the Vee.

That would be the Wee.

I do like to cruise around 85mph, and I do tend to pack fairly heavy so I want a bike that won't have trouble pushing my tubby butt around the countryside.That would be the Vee. (85 is around 12000 rpm on a Wee.

Don't forget the additional storage space on the Wee where a second pipe should be!:cool:

Don't buy either, the little bike is so flickable you might fall off, the big bike has so many running and drive train problems plus it is sooooo heavy you might be better off with a BMW or a HONDA ST 1300. With either of these two bikes you buy it one time and don't have to modify and add hang on's like the V or W Strom bikes. Plus the Honda and BMW have resale value the lowly Suzuki is slated for the dung heap which ever size you buy.

Funny you mentioned the Beemer. I was looking at the GS1200A's a lot before I made up my mind on the Strom. Something about that little shaft drive thing imploding whenever it feels like it. Not very good IMO. Oh yeah, and the rear end bearings overheating and melting the seal, and then causing the rear wheel to catch on fire. And aluminum side boxes look really funny on an ST so I doubt that would work. As for resale, any Jap piece of junk doesn't have it, period. Trust me, I know this first hand. But if I wanted a bike just to resale, I think I'd skip the Honda, and the Beemer and just buy a Harley. But I'd rather just ride the pig snot out of the little Jap bike and be done with it.

The 6fiddy by almost all accounts is 62 HP max.

I think you should look at the 1k. I think the 6fiddy runs out of breath at higher speeds. It does it, just has to be pushed a little harder.
