DL650 Injection / forks issues.

Love my DL650 except around town. When I roll off the throttle fully (great engine braking) and open it again and get a horrible snatch/jerk/surge.
Changing up a gear first helps and yes, you can use the clutch but a twin 650 should handle low rev pickup without snatching. Any easy solutions?
I'm sure it is had carbs it wouldn't be an issue. Anyone else have this problem? I know Honda had a similar issue when they released the ST1300 injected.

Rebuilt my forks with new seals and bushes but kept the standard springs, used ATF fluid and rubber gaiters to protect the seals.
I put the correct oil volume in but it hammers a bit on bumpy roads. Any cheap upgrade like a spacer or will it take new springs that might sort this out?

Thanks for any advice.

How many miles on the bike?

Have you checked your chain tension lately? In my experience driveline lash (not fueling) is the biggest influence on the off-on throttle snatch. The worst I ever experienced was when I had a cascading failure of sprocket carrier bearing, cush drive rubber pieces, and chain. Tons of play all around made it very jerky.

A friend of mine described jerky behavior when his TPS failed, but I haven't experienced that failure myself.

Does your bike have preload adjustment screws upfront? If so you may be able to adjust the hammering behavior out.

To pass emissions tests and save fuel there are times when the fuel is shut off, this produces a jerk when the throttle is opened again.

Ensure there is no slack in the throttle cables, the throttle tube has a bump on it to ensure it will get to wide open throttle, if the cables are slack the bump plays a bigger part.

You can fit a throttle tamer, the bump on the tamer is a little further around the tube so the kick in point is a little later.

Most find they get comfortable after a week or two and just live with it.

On gear changes I never fully shut my throttle, that helps heaps.

You can also have a play with the TPS if it is out of adjustment it exaggerates the issue.
I was reading about the 'boosterplug', might it help?

Thanks - it's a 2010 with 130k miles. Chain tension is good, Maybe cush drive is worth checking. Good call. Thanks
If you're new to this bike, some level of throttle snatchiness is "normal", after checking the other drive train bits mentioned. That feature always annoyed me on my Gen 1, but I got used to it. The FI is crude compared to, say, BMW's (maybe the only way in which my K75S was superior to the DL).

Proper spring weight in front? What's the sag measurement? Move up to 10 weight, experiment.
Throttle cables adjusted properly (too much slack)?
With that many miles and new to you, I would also definitely check whether the countersprocket nut has come loose and if so the state of the countershaft splines. I've seen several accounts of people getting dicked over buying bikes where improper maintenance caused damage.
My bike developed BOTH of the problems you described. When new the throttle was smooth when rolled on and off, and the forks gave a smooth ride, both problems developed abruptly. Unfortunately, I don't have a clear fix, but I've managed to tame it. Here's my story FWIW.

Throttle - Very smooth for the first 15K miles then one day after pulling off the highway the bike almost stalled as the revs dropped below 1K RPM when closing the throttle, this was the beginning of the jerky on/off throttle problem. I did every FI adjustment in the service manual, replaced the TPS, with no, or little improvement. I found keeping the throttle adjusted with no slack helped the most. The problem has diminished over time (90K miles) and now only occasionally appears.

Forks - First few years forks were decent, no complaints, until I changed the fluid at 30K miles. Everything was fine for a few hundred miles until I took the bike on a horribly frost heaved rode in early spring. When I got back onto smooth pavement I noticed a harshness in the forks, they weren't reacting to small bumps. Thinking something went out of whack, I re-aligned the forks, no improvement. Then performing one change at a time I went through the forks - removed the fork brace, switched to 5W oil, back to stock Showa 10W oil, all with no improvement, until I replaced the bushings. Things were good for a few years until the next time I changed the fluid with Showa 10W and the problem started all over again. I changed the bushings again, aligned the forks a dozen times, but this time it didn't completely fix the problem. At this point it's not horrible, but not as smooth as it has been, I live with it.

Out of curiosity - has anyone fitted carbs to a gen 1 DL? Probably get ECU errors at very least.
Well, I seem to have mine under control now. My tyres pressure in both tyres were (way) too low. Set to 40/36 as a starting point. I adjusted the clutch and the drive chain a little tighter than I'm used to. It's almost stopped the snatching and even the forks seem better. I never thought it would be that easy.
Thanks to everyone for all the advice.
Yeah, how worn are the chain and sprockets? Kinked and loose chain will for sure cause on off throttle.

New as I replaced them when I got the bike. Still worth remembering though. Thanks
