Don't know how it happened, but when I came out from work today, I noticed this on the right side fairing. Beware, these pictures are not for the faint of heart or stomach. ;)





The bike was standing where I parked it. No scratches or dings on the Acerbis handguard (that would show it was knocked over). Plus there were 2 bikes parked on my right side. If mine had fallen over, it would have been dominoes for the others. I haven't had the right side off for anything in several months. I don't think I over-tightened the bolts. I haven't changed the brake fluid nor is it leaking. I haven't really stared at my fairings much either; that is until tonight. So I didn't notice if the cracks were there before or what.

Here's my low-tech fix until I can find a new right side blue fairing for a K7 DL650. It's blue painter's tape that I had sitting on my shelf.



I doubt it will help, but I hope so.

I used to be in the collision repair business and was also a damage appraiser. It looks like there aren't any scratches to the fairing at point of impact. This could have possibly been done with a fist. Also, what kind of bikes are parked near you?

Some of those allen bolts have shoulders on them, others don't. check to see if you got them swapped somehow. The shoulders let the bolt tighten w/o pressuring/cracking the plastic.

I used to be in the collision repair business and was also a damage appraiser. It looks like there aren't any scratches to the fairing at point of impact. This could have possibly been done with a fist. Also, what kind of bikes are parked near you?
Bike #1 (right next to me) - Kawi Ninja 250. I work and ride with the guy.
Bike #2 (next one over) - Triumph Tiger. I work and ride with the guy.

Never say never, but I would never think they'd "punch" my bike. I rode in with the guy on the Ninja. He didn't kick it when he got off.

Who knows?

Checked the bolts...

Man, if this is it, nominate me for the IdiotStrom Award.

So I checked, the bolt with the shoulder on it was on the bottom, where the fairing meets the black strip under the seat/tank. The bolt on top did not have a shoulder on it.

Million dollar question - did I have them backwards?

No, that's the correct arrangement. The question is whether you got the top hole over the projection and the shoulder on the bottom through the hole before tightening. It looks like a direct strike did the damage though. It could be somebody knocked over the bike next to it and pulled it back up after the contact. A handlebar end could be the contact item.

I'm going with the Handlebar theory. I can almost see a few dings from a round handlebar end in the red circle.

Ask the dude who parked on that side, and look for slight ding marks on the end of his handlebar. I'll bet the end of his handlebar is rubber and not a metal bar end.

And I think the best cards you have in your hand right now are no better than a pair of 8's :mrgreen:, just trying to cheer you up. That blue is too nice, I'd be crying in my beer.

I could see a handlebar causing the top crack, but not the bottom. But who knows.

Just priced a replacement from Oneida - $165 w/ shipping from NY to CA. Local stealer wants $214 w/ tax according to their website.

I don't believe that any of your co-workers did it on purpose...call me simple but I think that most people are good and don't tend to go around damaging other people's things on purpose.

Since you seemed to have the proper bolts in the correct places, my guess is that it's a stress fracture. I had one happen on the upper bolts just below the windshield. I think mine happened because there isn't much "meat" around the bolt hole but it's plastic so it can happen anywhere. I was able to "match and mend" and you can't see whenre it happened. I'm not so sure you can do that with your case.

Sorry to hear about your bike Boo Boo. I wouldn't be surprised if both cracks were caused at the same time with one blow. As bad as the top one appears it could have caused undue stress else where on the plastic causing a stress crack to appear below. Seeing that there is so much plastic on the Stroms I worry about cracking it just doing maintenance. I have a bad habit of over-tightening bolts. Best of luck fixing her up.

From the pic it looks like there's a small wedge of plastic missing from around the top bolt...at about 5 o'clock. Were you able to find that piece?
