My first posting (anywhere). I bought a 2005 dl used for tooling around Mexico, and just love it. However, I was getting about 29MPG. So, I had it completely dyno tuned and it came all the way up to about 31. Seeing you guys talking about 45 MPG puts me on suicide watch.
Any clues?:confused:

I get notably less when I am twisty on the throttle, but when I behave myself and keep the rpms under 5000, I do fairly well.
I have been as low as 38 mpg, and even as high as 45 mpg when keeping the throttle reasonable, and that was on our recent trip down the coast of Oregon two up and fully loaded.

Check the easy stuff first like throttle body sync. Look at the air filter and maybe change the plugs.

I know folks say the Vee is challenged in the mileage department but I've never got less than 40mpg so far.

+1 on checking the easy (and cheap stuff). A while back my mileage had dipped rather suddenly (5-6mpg over two tanks with exactly the same driving)when I was trouble shooting the problem opened up the filter box had a ton of dead bugs on top tapped out the bugs (otherwise the filter was pretty clean...less than 2k on it at the time) put it back on and back to previous mileage. Even with that problem I don't think I have ever had under 40mpg but I live in the flatlands of Iowa and rarely ride two up.
I know there are several members who have posted that they put screening over the opening to keep the crud out.

Also keep in mind that most places, perhaps ALL places, are selling gas containing up to 15% ethanol now. You won't get the same mileage with ethanol as gasoline because it doesn't have as much combustion energy so you can expect your mpg to go down somewhat. Your government at work: Pay more, get less.
