My googoe-fu has failed me once again. Anybody have a link to a chart / infographic here (or an external website) where I can plug in an engine number and figure out what year it is? Bonus would be if it showed what frame VIN it was linked to, but I'm not sure that's possible.

Maybe a better question, or another question, would be: does the number stamped on the motor indicate the manufacture date of the motor?

Just curious because it seems my motor has been out before, or at least worked on, and I'm wondering if it's the original motor or not.

Edit: I just read your reason again and went out and checked on my V-Strom. The last six numbers of the frame# on the headstock are on the VIN plate, but the punched numbers on the motor have no relationship to either.

In my experience that is different to cars which often use the same numbers for chassis and engine.

it's interesting that in the US vehicle titles only ever reference the VIN. my experience outside of the US (and maybe canada) is that titles and other forms of ownership documentation, list chassis and engine number. makes it harder to steal an engine, but also harder to legally replace the engine.

hell, in nicaragua, you cannot paint your vehicle a different color without written permission from the national police!

Kinda curious on how this works too.

I hear it's tough to get a motor changed on a MC and title though.

Suzuki engine numbers have never had any relation to the frame numbers. This question pops up over on the vintage Suzuki forum all the time, sometimes with a lot of misplaced anger attached...

Suzuki is also an incredibly frugal company, and they're known to empty their parts bins before switching production. So there are many examples of bikes with various parts and engines that overlap model years. For example, a 1981 cylinder head on a 1982 bottom end. Sometimes this is mentioned in the parts fiches, sometimes you just have to pay closer attention to the bike in front of you.

Two examples. My 80/7 BMW got the engine swapped out for a R100 engine, I didn't ask permission. The dealer I got the bike from wanted the section of frame that had the VIN back. For salvage purposes.
My friend had a bit of a crash with his Ducati 900SS and swapped out the frame for one on the internet, ditto the swing arm and then the engine when he bent a valve. He made no changes through the DMV.
Don't ask, don't tell...until you sell it?
As far as cars go we swapped out VW engines when the boys first started out and we got a Japanese motor from Watanabe's and stuck it in one of the son's cars but didn't do any paperwork.

Yeah, forgot to update this. As you guys have mentioned, engine # has no connection w/VIN except maybe in some ancient Suzuki paper archive that we'll never have access to. :) Only thing the number tells is that it's a 4-stroke V motor, and the motor serial number. So, I'm done looking. :)

Unfortunately for me, I registered my bike as non-op, so after a call to the DMV I discovered that I'll be re-registering it once I'm ready...and they *will* check the motor number. If it's different, I have to trailer it to CHP and get it certified, then trailer it to DMV with that documentation, and finally they may register it.

That's only if I swap the cases, of course.

I've got a similar issue. I got a salvage from iamsmiling and need to eventually go and get the lights checked. I fixed the forks and got some farkles but haven't had the time to go do the other official things. When I went to DMV I got in my name and did the non-op. I do fire it up occasionally and keep the battery charged with a charger. Like Frankenstein monster, It's still alive!
Right now it's stuck in the garage behind 12 wine boxes of old folk vinyl records I inherited from my brother.
