I recently purchased a 2016 650. Considering fabricating side racks to keep small saddle bag off of the pipe and an addition point of attachment. Multiple sites to attach to bike are available. My question is, approximately what are the dimensions of the rectangular portions of commercial racks.

I‘ve made my own for a few dollar for the same reason. Made and measured free hand so dimensions would not help you. First Gen anyway. Used about 3metres of 3x25mm flat steel, a bit of black zink spray and a few nutserts. So I only remove 2 scews on each side if I ever have to take the rear rack of.

Thomas, before you start fabricating, double check Amazon, I picked up this rack system for under $100, also I cut some HDPE cutting boards to give the soft bags more rigidity. :)

Was going to mount the boards on the outside, but changed it to inside, and I cut the straps.
