Digging up the Aux-lighting topic

Hi All,

Just gone through a 20 page search of the forum looking up information on the lights available for the V-Strom, and I suppose I'm looking for some recommendations......

More than likely I'll need 35w lamps as I plan to run heated grips, gps, autocom & transmitter, maybe a heated vest if possible. I hear the extra output on the DL1000 is is about 150w or thereabouts. I've read things about ElectroSport Stators and Rectifiers. Do these actually increase the available wattage? Is there a proven amount? 10w, 20w, 30w etc.....

I've been looking at the PIAA's, Hella's etc, but still haven't a clue as to what I'd like/need. Mainly I want to be seen by cars/trucks day and night, but not completely blind them in possible (although open to arm twisting). Not sure if I need driving lights or fog lights, as if the weather is bad, more than likely I won't be out on the bike (so go with driving) but I like the idea of wide beam on fogs.

Lastly the shape. If I had a choice I'd go with small ones like the PIAA 004 rather than the 510's. I like the look of some of the Hella's (Micro Fog DE) but they are 55w. Mounted, most likely a amotostuff or pat walsh bar, but I'm open to other suggestion, if fact I'd welcome them greatly.

So any imput would be greatly appreciated, and any photo's of your own bikes kitted out would be great. Cheers.....

PS - like the look of the TT lights but the price is crazy - http://www.touratech.com/shops/008/product_info.php?cPath=477_560_851&products_id=6041

Take a good look at Hella products, they make some nice smaller units that you can mount on the forks for a triangular effect and then add a headlight modulator. If the Hella come with 55 watt bulbs you can swap them out for 35 watt bulbs. I have cheaper Blazer lites on the forks that are 20 watt MR 11 halogen bulbs in a bright yellow. Quite effective and noticeable. Also have a headlight modulator.

BLM-Accessories.com. Halogen lighting is becoming a thing of the past but cheap. Uses too many watts. HID's is the top of the line. They are now making them with the housing enclosing the ballast. The light is out of this world. 12 watts to 36 watts that will blind you even in the daytime.

I have Hella Optilux lightsfrom http://www.rallylights.com/ with 35w bulbs installed. A mere $20 for pretty high quality lights. They're mounted on the AMotoStuff bar. I am VERY pleased with both the lights and the price.

I have the Hella Micro DE fogs on my car and Hella FF200 on the Strom. The Micro DEs are far superior to the FFs and, for that matter, superior to any other medium-sized fog lamp that I've ever had, including others from Hella, Cibie and Piaa.
Another suggestion if you like to run alot of "stuff," is Electrosport's high-output stator.

Many many thanks for the input from people....

Yesterday I bit the bullet and bought the Hella Micro DE Fogs for £65.99 + £14.48 shipping to Ireland (total $158 ) off eBay. Got them from a guy in Germany. Also noticed another guy selling the HID version for €358 ($478 ) and again from Germany if anyone is interested.

I also went with the ElectroSport Stator and Rectifier. I emailed them and they claimed an approx 35% increase in wattage so I should now have loads of power to run everything including the 55w lamps (didn't want to have to put 35w bulbs into them). So whether that is a 35% increase in total or a 35% increase in the extra available wattage I'm not sure, but either way I'll have loads of power.

I bought the Pat Walsh light bar and I plan to mount the lights under the bar rather than on top as most people seem to do. I'm trying to create the "light triangle" so other vehicles can see me. The fogs should give me extra light at night too. More than likely I'll also swap out the standard headlight bulbs for PIAA ones......

If I may suggest going with a dual headlight relay (got mine from Eastern Beaver-GREAT service!) and the Hella "+50" bulbs. I was amazed at the difference those two things made...
Do a search on this site for "Electrosport stator." A guy from there posted a graph on the output of their stator vs the stock one.

Yes, it's the same thing. A relay basically is a much more direct route for juice going to the headlights. Depending on who you believe, up to 30% more electricity gets to the bulbs with a relay setup. And either relay setup is plug 'n play, with two wires going to the battery. It took me about 30 minutes to wire mine. The stator for the 1k should be very close the the Wee's, I'd think.

I just don't understand why go with such inefficient lighting as Motolights or smaller Hellas, PIAAs etc when for about the same money and 1/3 the wattage draw you can get lights that are radically bright and efficient. I guess being in the LD community has spoiled me with the latest technology.

HID-if one can afford it-is definately the way to go. I can't afford $600+ for a set of aux lights... Also, it seems that HID lights are only available in a driving-type beam and not a wide-angle fog. I want close-up light that I can use most of the time. Run a set of driving lights on the road, with other riders/drivers, and I'll bet you'd see road rage.
