I am planning on attending this year's event, had a lot of fun last year and am getting more confident in the dirt. :yesnod:

So here is my plan, let me know any suggested changes and/or if you want to join. I am willing to share a hotel room and the expense on the couple nights I was contemplating a hotel, but I got to warn you...a co-worker of mine on a recent out of town trip got his own room on the side of the hotel with the rail road tracks so he could get some peace.

At any rate, here's the initial plan. If any great suggestions come in, I'll make edits below it.

Rule #1, Avoid the interstate.

-July 12, leave Denver at 8am.Ride to Thermopolis, WY (405 mi). Camp at "Fountain of Youth RV park" - I want some soak time after the first big day. :fineprint:

-July 13, ride to Missoula and get a room or camp?

-July 14, Join the V-Strom planned group and ride Lolo and Magruder Corridor into Boise.

-July 15 and 16, enjoy the gathering

-July 17, from Boise to Green River, WY (Take in Craters of the Moon and Atomic City)

-July 18, Green River to ??? I don't want to push too hard and get into Denver really late, would rather have another day to play (and buffer for errors in judgment)

Total loop will be around 2310 miles not including riding at the actual event.

Suggestions welcome.

just read about beartooth pass in the recent "Motorcycle Escape" magazine. I have rerouted to include that stretch.

I am now thinking of this being about a 9 to ten day trip, with three days up and three days back so I don't feel rushed. Maybe even a four day back to take the long way.

Still open to suggestions...

When planning a long trip, what does everyone stipulate when it comes to time planning. I was considering timing around 50 mph to account for food and fuel stops and sight seeing. Is this good?

I'll probably see you at the Lolo meet up.

Looks like a good plan, Beartooth & Chief Joseph highway, are two must sees if you are going through that area. I did that area twice last summer and on one we had advance reservations, the other did not. Both were very enjoyable, the only place we had to scramble for a room was in Cody Wyoming. If you have not been there I would plan on taking it easy...lots to see, it would be a shame to miss something because of a schedule.

Over Cheif Joseph and down into Sunlight Basin is great. Nice camp spots there too. Thats the only Gold Metal Trout Waters in Wyoming. You can also head up into Sunlight Basin. The gravel rd goes up to the edge of the Absaroka Wilderness that surounds Yellowstone. Osborne Russell was probably the first white man to see that area. What he writes in his journal about it is very insightful. The Shoshone Indians of the area told him of the man in the clouds that sometimes comes into Sunlight basin. Cheif Joseph's brother is barried on top of Dead Indian Pass. If you catch it right, you can stand there and see exactly what the Indians were talking about, and Osborne Russell also saw and described in his journal.:iagree:

Updated plans

OK, I have made my payments to the organizers and the hotel. Here is the updated plan:

12th - Denver > Saratoga
13th - slab day. Saratoga, WY > Bear Lake, ID (Someone recommended a spring there)
14th - Bear Lake > Boise.
FUN RIDES AND whatever else (hoping for some clinics)
17th - Head up Lolo, might camp somewhere up there (recommendations accepted)
18th - Goal is getting close to Bear Tooth Pass
19th - Bear Tooth Pass when I am fresh  and goal to make it to Thermopolis for the night.
20th - where ever the wind blows me back toward Colorado
21st - back in Colorado.

Any suggestions or route modifications by those who have ridden these roads are welcome. Tag-a-longs welcome too, I ride my own pace and snore though.

Of course this all depends on my doc releasing me and allowing me to drive. :argue:

I'm still a very definate maybe for this. Have the kitchen pass, but some other stuff may conflict. It is the same weekend as the Colorado Bow Hunters Convention. And I won't know if work will inter the pix until the week before.
