why on earth would deleted threads remain and occupy space when they've been deleted?

Often when a thread is "deleted" it's really "SOFT deleted", which means it's just been locked and hidden from the view of normal members. This allows a forum to comply with data retention laws that might exist in relevant jurisdictions as well as to allow later review by forum admins should there be a need to examine the conduct of a particularly problematic member or the need to provide proof of spamming to a third party service.

I got deleted once for being a DH. Think before you type or the fickle delete key of fate will strike you down.
The deleted post stays so the perpetrator may be aware of their insegevienousness.

They should have been unstuck. I just did that.
