Hello,

I am really tired of my 2002 DL1000 surging, sputtering and backfiring! Does anyone know a dealer in SoCal who handles remapping the fuel injection?

I just had mine remmaped here in San Diego at Southbay Motorsports yesterday. Talk about night and day. The bike runs soooo much better, pulls from 2K rpms all the way up smoothly now. I had them check my TBS as well and they charged me $70 total, YMMV. Well worth the $ as I was not going to go out and waste $295 on a power commander. They said they richen up alot of 'California' bikes due to the emmisions requirements making the bikes lean.

So far 200 miles on it and my mileage looks like it might be just a few mpg less than before, an acceptable price to pay as I was averaging 45-50 before.

and I thought I was patient waiting 4 months to do this :D .

Keep us posted on your MPG. You had one of the better mileages that I recall seeing. I've never broken 40 on recreational riding with my swapped out ECU. :shock:

Define: Recreational :lol:

I'm so damn cheap I'd rather put up with the occasional stumble just to get better gas mileage so you know I'll be watching my mileage for the next few tanks :?

Hey Marndo, I spoke to Mike Proo the service manager at Sobay about doing the same on my 650. He said no problem and that it would make a big difference. I just gotta get in there to have it done. I am glad to hear that it made a difference for you.

Make em fix it

The 5% solution! My 05 DL1000 has stumbled and died since day one, I now have 5,000 miles on it and no change---until----yesterday. Finally after three months of bugging my dealer about the lean run condition that these bikes are delivered in I managed to get them to reprogram my ecu. This entailed a lot of patience on my part, a willing service manager on the dealer end and a cooperative regional service rep from Suzuki. Here is what I did: continued visits to the service dept. with the same complaint, stumbles, dies, etc., I gave them info on how to cure the problem, ie, yosh box, richen the mix by 5%, look at chat rooms on the internet about the problem, another dealer name that told me how to get the rep to step up and fix it. The bright blue headers were a sign that there would be future problems with the motor if it wasn't addressed now and I pointed out to the service mgr. that I would be collecting on my extended warranty for holed pistons and other damage caused by lean running conditions. I also pointed out the inherent dangers of the engine dying in intersections when I pulled in the clutch lever while waiting to turn. I was always polite and friendly but firm in my talks and let them know that I would pursue this issue until resolved, I also told them that I would not purchase a power commander or pay someone to do this-in short they could not wear me down by ignoring me or pleading that Suzuki won't do anything about it or "thats the way these bikes are".
So, anyway, the rep sent a yosh box to my dealer, they plugged it in and did it's thing and my bike now runs the way it should have from day one. It idles, doesn't surge or search, doesn't stall and the front wheel comes off the ground when shifting! Oh, by the way, my service manager told me to "keep this to myself", so I guess Suzuki dosen't want us to know that this is a problem and that they will fix it. Good luck and keep after them!

Hey Speed what is worng with your bike? Or is this a performance improvement?

I had to go back to the dealer the next day as I forgot to pickup the new airfilter I ordered and stopped in and asked the techs how much they richened it and they just said don't worry about it, it runs great now doesn't it. I'm not going to split hairs. I suspect there might be something about messing with the emisions that they don't want broadcasted around the place lest some busy body get busy and go after them on some environmental cause. Remember, this is California :roll: .

Yesterday morning, I spent an hour and $70 with the good folks over at Southbay Motorsports in National City, CA. Many THANKS to Marndo for recommending this folks as they were first rate in all aspects of the job. Very knowledgeable staff, courteous and completely professional. They even had the requisite smokin' hot cashier girl behind the counter.

Now my V-Strom runs smooth and very strong without any of the previous surges, stumbles and gurgles. I thoroughly recommend getting the remap done and especially Marndo for his fast response and great call on Southbay!

I don't have any problem with it like on the 1000, I am just looking for any way to make it better. The service manager at Southbay said it would make it even better but not as drastic an improvement as on the 1000 though.

I just had my '04 1000 remapped/sync'd today at Malcolm Smith in Riverside. Fantastic results! Got rid of all the problems I was experiencing. Much smoother, more snap at the bottom, and will pull from 2k rpm easily now. Engine runs silky smooth compared to before.

Very good staff there ~ friendly and the head service rep is ex-Suzuki and knows his stuff. Rides and works on Vstroms as well. They are the folks who set up the Vstrom that's in the IBR right now.

Is this just a US thing?
My 'Canadian spec' 05 650 has always been an easy starter, hot or cold, settling down to a steady 1200 rpm idle. It accelerates cleanly and smoothly in all gears. Apart from some low rpm jerkiness when I first got it, cured by a FI sync (illustrated instructions courtesy of the Yahoo DL650 group) I have had zero driveability issues.
