gpscity.ca has the Zumo 396 LMT-S for $339.95CDN right now. It's on backorder, but is expected in stock August 2. New units, not refurbished. Best Canadian price I've seen. Works out to about $260US.

I kept visiting gpscity and I hovered, but never pushed the 'buy' button until last friday. Unit arrived yesterday. Seems OK. LMT-S included Garmin-branded RAM U clamp, post with 1" dia. ball, short arm and 1" dia. ball & plate that mounts to the back of the GPS mount. So the included hardware seems to be solid.

I have never had a GPS before, but I figured the price was low enough that I would try the new toy.

I am now about to launch into pulling some bodywork so that I can route the power cable back to the battery. Though others on ADV have mentioned a heated grip connectors under the fairing. I've read and been told that the GPS unit will not charge from the 2017 lighter plug, but using a usb insert, it does show that it is connected to power. I can't say if it is getting enough power to override the battery life in the unit.

I connected it to my computer, and it indicated some pending updates for maps and software. Do that too about 90 minutes.

I think my GPS needs will be modest but it will be interesting to see if it provides more accessible mapping than the iPhone. I'll try it on my visit to the Okanagan in mid Aug, as well as my trip to northern Vancouver Island last week of August.

Same thing here. I’ve never had a gps other than my phone and I caught a deal on this same unit at $249 or something like that little over a month ago. Installed it a couple of weeks ago and works well. I was surprised that I can control the music from my Cardo FREECOM on it. Coming from someone who is not a techy gadget guy, the gps is a decent unit and easy to use

Bought my 396 at The GPS Store about a month ago -- $249. The price goes up and down, so you have to keep tabs.
As for mounting, if you do NOT want to hardwire, you can shave one corner of the mount off, leaving a 3-screw attachment (works just fine - I also did this with my older 350, and held up for years w/o issue). If you'd like a picture of my modification let me know.

There is no issue with charging it in the existing power port of the 2017. I have a dual USB insert, and I can charge both the 396 and my phone. The power port is attached to a 3A fuse, which I've replaced w/ a 5A (I've already checked, and there is NO issue w/ doing this. The associated cabling will handle 5A easily).

As for the 396, I'm loving it. Much less glare than the 350, more features, not the least of which is the "Adventurous Route" setting. I live north of Atlanta -- mountain road biker's paradise. I'll take a ride and make an effort to get lost... Then set it to route me home... With the Adventurous Route setting, it's already taken me down roads I've never been on before... It's a blast...

Great info thanks. I have a Cardo Packtalk Bold so I'm hoping the 396 is easily connected to it.

Nice to read that it charges from the 2017 lighter port. Interesting also about the 3 > 5 amp fuse. I won't be attaching anything with a serious draw anyway, and I would be happy not to add extra wires.

I know it charges from a computer USB port, so I'd think that any sort of current input would charge the battery, but at whatever rate is available. That said, electricity is like magic to me. Plumbing I get, electrons, not at all.

So nice to be able to drop into a forum like this and get help and experience and advice so quickly.

(now head on over to the 2017 windshield thread and steer me straight on that one:wink2:)

I also got one during this recent sale and I like it quite well. I never really was comfortable having my phone externally mounted, to tell the truth. I ended up wiring it into the pigtail SAE connector for the Battery Tender. That way, when I get back to the garage, I am sure to unplug the GPS in order to hook up the charger. Otherwise, it can be left on all the time during a ride or turned off manually. SFSG.
