Received oil cooler and radiator protectors in excellant shape. Quick turnaround.The rad protector looks nice on the bike.On the other hand watch out when you tighten the screw for the oil cooler, I think I did mine a bit too tight and the mounting area cracked. I'm going to try to epoxy it and see if I can salvage it.

Hey there, chiliwill, I couldn't help but notice your post, especially with "warning" next to my name. :) LOL I'd be more than happy to send you a free replacement oil cooler guard cover......no, I insist, it'll be on it's way to you tomorrow. Epoxy won't work on the ABS plastic.

A free part replacement on a customer error? That's VERY cool. I do hope that all your customers don't try to take advantage of this though.;) Is this normal policy or did you read Stommette thread? LOL:p But seriously That's the kind of customer care I enjoy.

Hope to do some biz with you as soon as I build up the farkle funds.

in how to keep a customer happy! Vendor's that treat me right earn a customer for life.

Example: 2002 on a motorcycle road trip thru Yellowstone and one of the pole's on a $49 tent I bought from Cabela's breaks! My tent, now useless, I called them from a pay phone in the park and they ask me where would I be staying the next night. Happen to be a motel, gave them the address and was told they would send a replacement overnight. When I got to the motel the next afternoon a new MSR Zoid 1 tent was in the box! That baby cost $200!

Customer for life!

If a person contacts me with a problem of a broken or defective part, which doesn't happen very often, I will immediately ship off a replacement part. That is my normal policy.

Yes, I did read Strommette's thread, it was very interesting. Trust me, it had nothing to do with my reply to chiliwill. The one area that makes it difficult to acommodate a customer as far as returns go, and I'm speaking basically for myself since I not only sell the items I have but I build each one myself, is, if a customer purchases one of my accessories and then down the road buys another accessory from a different company only to find it will not fit or is incompatible to my accessory and wants to return my item. Many times the items I sell will be slightly modified or customized to suit a particular Stromer's needs and after doing this it's very difficult to re-sell a returned part. I have occasionally done this for customers but it needs to be discussed before the purchase. I'm more than happy to do the research necessary to find out for a customer whether or not my accessory will fit with another company's product. Being that I will do custom modifications to my accessories, the communication is very important.

Concerning Strommette's thread, my biggest question would be - specifically, how long should a vendor or manufacturer be responsible for a part that may eventually fail to perform its intended function from wear/usage? Two months, two years, ten years? :) What is a reasonable amount of time? I'd hate to be in my 80's and have to hobble out to my shop and put together a replacement part for something that I had built twenty/thirty years prior for a fellow Stromer. :)

I personally don't sell any items but I would think an item like what Strommette has should last for two years with out defects. I don't know how old the part in question is but I can see how the vibrations of a motorcycle could cause stress cracks in them over time, especially if it has been more than 2 years.

I think that some of the materials builders use for different applications all mainly in the name of lighter weight, such as aluminum or phenolic fiberglass, are pretty much pushing the limits of what is possible with these materials. And the lighter weight of parts made from such materials oftentimes comes at the expense of the individual parts durability. A couple of examples that I've encountered in the past involve not only the choice of material but the tempering process that was used.


Many years ago I purchased a High Standard Supermatic Citation target pistol, a very high quality piece, a gun I still own to this day. But one day while disassembling it to clean the slide, the slide spring guide pin fell out. When it hit the concrete floor of my shop it shattered like crystal. Was this a defective part? Or merely the manufacturers attempt to create a part that would be highly resistant to sliding surface wear? On the other hand, I owned an AR180 Sporter rifle that, because the manufacturer wanted to keep the weight of this rifle to a minimum, used aluminum to manufacture its clips from. Unfortunately the lightest aluminum is usually the softest and the harder brass cartridges, as they were forced into the chamber, rubbed against the ears of the clip and wore them out in no time flat, this caused the cartridges to sit in the clip with a nose-up attitude and constantly jam. I later purchased a 40 round steel magazine that worked perfectly for years. Yes, I occasionally had to rub some oil over it to keep it from getting a little rust on it, but it worked every time I used it.

I was worried when I saw, "Dan Vesel Warning"! Dan's top notch, as anybody that has every dealt with him knows. Glad to hear it wasn't a service/part error. Keep up the good work Dan!

Another warning, a V-Strom owner posted on ADVrider site reported that when he hit a curb, with his vessel skid plate, the skid plate made a hole in his crankcase, he had pictures.

805gregg, The problem regarding the long mounting bracket on some of the older model skidplates we built has long since been taken care of, about a year now. All skidplates (since that time) we produce have that area of the bracket reshaped to eliminate the condition you referred to.

I guess maybe you missed mention of this at that particular thread.
