Cycle World International Motorcycle Show Phoenix Report (Nov 4, 2006)

I went and spent the best $12 (to me) in a long while. One just to answer your questions about the ABS Wee-NO! Not a one at the show. The Suzi guys really wished they had them in stock, I think they could have sold them right there. I was told after the first of the year! They are taking orders as fast as they can. It was so funny, I was down at the BMW display for about an hour (BMW club entry is some serious dinero) and when I went by Suzuki, all the BMW guys and ladies too, were around the Stroms-1K and 650, with the 650 leading the charge. Beemer guys seriously interested, not going to get rid of the Beemer of course...ahm....

I wanted to see the new Ulysses and I did. The Buells’ have great front brakes. I got to ride several Buells and the brakes were great on all of them. The cooling fans were on all the time and I cannot imagine this bike performing well at over 100 degrees F, especially in the desert, although I was assured that it would. The fans were running even when the bikes were stopped/off and one, a Lightning short, wouldn’t find neutral until I was riding for a while. The seat on the Uly is very good in comparison with the Strom. I sure didn’t like the rev limiter (at about 7K), just when I thought I was going someplace, the rev limiter cut me off as the Wee keeps pulling. I guess it is something I would have to get used to. I didn’t particularly like the gauges. I can assure you I am keeping my Strom-But Eric Buell is getting close. Easy maintenance, great shock adjustment, super stiff front end and very impressive brakes-two fingers is all it takes. One of the guys riding with me has a Caponard and said the same about the brakes. The Buells shift much better than Harleys, not quite as good as Suzi’, which aren’t as good as Hondas....therein lies my limited comparison.

I really enjoyed the show. It seems to me that people in the business ought to at least fake the same enthusiasm and have knowledge of past and present of their company. Very limited stuff about our new MOTOGP World Champion Nicky Hayden. Two ball caps and some t-shirts, one Edwards cap and 2 Rossi hats at exorbitant prices-all $35-$40 range. AMA guys were super cool and had an MV Agusta on display. If you are in the market for a helmet, this is the place to buy one, Shoei, Arai and several others at 50% off.

Very nice displays by the Big 4, BMW, Ducati, Piaggio-Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Vespa, MV Agusta, Chris Carrs record breaking ride and of course a bunch of chopper manu’s that are all the same to me as much as I am a rice burner to them-no insult taken or implied.

You could choose to ride: Aprilias, Buells, Hondas, Stars, Kawasakis, Harleys and Victory. These rides were pretty good and lasted for 20-30 minutes. We went out in groups after a short briefing, waivers etc, all one needed was a helmet which was supplied in some instances and a valid motorcycle licence.

Take the kids, there are free stunt shows and a dude in the globe, a game trailer and it will keep them busy. Bring your licence and take a ride on something, it is free and I gained a little knowledge for comparison purposes.

Thanks for the report. I might go to the Cleveland show in January, but I usually have a scheduling conflict. No demo rides either: Cleveland in the dead of winter is not condusive to test rides :)

V Strom Superiority

Nothing was said about the 2008 1000 V Strom. Big talk under the Suzuki tent was the M109 and Boulevards, and of course the GSX-R’s and Hayabusa. A Ben Spies race bike was present. The STROMS had their own corner and a couple of guys with Suzuki shirts answering questions, primarily about the ABS version. I kept running into the same guys/ladies-I guess we are looking at the same types of ADV-Tourers/Sports. I wrote a little on the Buell because they seem to be the latest challenger to V Strom Superiority! There are a few good things I would love to see incorporated. I think that for us and the type of riding mostly done here it is great news, compared to the Strom’s “going away or Euro only” rumors like a while ago. Manu’s are noticing. Look at Ducati, as it seems like the little Multi or any 620cc based machine, I didn’t see one displayed, and the big Multi grew a 100 ccs. But, ALLEGEDLY, Ducati will not debut all its machines until the Milan show, sorry I won’t make that one. There are a lot of shows left this year/next and if you are unable to go, maybe someone else could answer to additional questions.

I am going to the Long Beach show in December. Load up on all the questions and I'll "Bust a Cap in der azzz" as they say in LB! Yo! lol :D

Also was there any sign of that new Concourse 14? I wonder about that one. Do you think Suzuki will use a 'busa hybrid to make their own entry? Or perhaps that new Bandit motor in a touring config?

Good thing I got here before Stromtrooper CTW did with his "This-Thread-Is-Useless-Without-Pics" emoticon.:p

Sorry to have missed you at the show, George. Several Stromtroopers were partying at the Ton Up booth across from Guzzi on the ground floor.

For my report and pics of the show click: HERE

BTW, I'll be in Flag one night this week to test some new gear in the upper teen temps.

photo shoot

Nice job on covering the event and making the photos available for all to see. I expected to see all the vstroms at the end (saving the best till last) but .... they never did appear??

Thanks again for posting the pics.

I didn't take a pic of any bike that looks exactly like the current year (sans maybe a new color) which is why you didn't see a V-Strom, FJR, Busa, and many, many others.

As an aside, if people are planning on attending other locations of this show I'd highly suggest checking to see which local stealership is offering discount admission tickets. Around here a half price ticket could have been had just about anywhere. Secondly, be advised that the people wearing official Exhibitor badges under manufactuer tents are most likely (as in 99%) NOT with corporate but with actually live locally, work at the local manufacturer stealership, and were hired to work the weekend. If you think I'm wrong ask them where they live despite their manufactuer tag saying "New York" or something. Yes, there is a corporate rep there but s/he is not walking around fielding questions (or complaints) from Joe Public and most likley has the title relating to marketing. It is a marketing event you know. ;)

Guzzi booth gives out free t-shirts that go fast so I'd head there first if freebie t's are your thing.

Wish I could be there... m/c related "swag" is infinitely cooler than the junk I get at database conferences...
