Just traded in my '00 Kawasaki Drifter at the dealership, for an '02 1000 v-strom. Came with hard Suzuki bags, center stand, and the front sprocket is now different. After checking thru the trunk, found a sprocket in there, and packaging of the one presently installed. Loving it so far!

One question tho. How long will it take to get used to the feel of such a higher road stance, and skinnier tires? My drifter, drifted along the road, with me what felt like inches above the tarmac. Those fat 16" tires/wheels let me just blunder my way over road inconsistencies. With these wheels/tires, I feel stuff more. Not complaining, just noticed a difference. Looking forward to LOADS of trouble-free miles.

On-site mechanic told me it's running 40W oil! Dino, but I'm switching to synthetic at the next service interval [4k mi] unless someone here tells me it's not a good idea.....

I am pretty sure that straight 40w oil is NOT what you want to be running in that bike. While I have a 650, that stiff of a straight weight oil is not good for the close engine tolerances, especially in cooler temps.

I will let the experts weigh in on this.

I'm not a motorcycle engine lubrication expert, but I play one on TV........................

DBC, Welcome to the Stromosphere.

You'll come to truly appreciate your new altitude, epecially when in traffic, not to mention the better cornering abilities and you won't even notice speed bumps anymore, kinda.

I really feel the neutral riding posture of the 'Strom is more comfortable, especially on rough roads and it allows for better control. (In my humble and biased opinion)

I've ridden a number of Harleys, my wife owns one and I am surrounded by Harley folk who are trying to convert me, so far nobody has ponied up the $25k to make it worth my while.

as far as getting used to it ... prolly a thousand miles, max. then you will probably find you can ride longer, faster, more comfortably.

cruisers are very comfortable for an hour or two. then your lower back will get sore from the cruiser slouch, not to mention the pounding it takes from bumps and potholes.

Getting used to the Wee didn't take long for me. Now, going back to the cruiser is a whole different story. What a cow!

I thought I was the only one uncomfortable on a cruiser.

I did do several hundered miles on a HD Road King which really wasn't bad, it's got a slightly more upright but I think that's more of a Touring Cruiser.

It's fascinating how many of my cruiser friends have declined offers to ride my bike. They mostly say it's too high. They're probably subconciously aware that they will be smitten like our new friend, DCB254.

I go back and forth between my Wee Strom and my Harley Ultra Classic on a regular basis. Usually takes me 15 minutes or so to get re-adjusted to the controls and feel of the bikes when I switch between the two, but that's about it.

This past weekend I rode my Ultra for about four hours on Saturday, then Sunday afternoon I was on the Wee for about three hours. Really, the biggest difference is getting used to the blinker controls. Once you get some miles on either style bike, it don't take long to get adjusted riding the bikes. Just got to remember that at twice the weight, the Harley don't stop as quick as the Wee.

I have a '98 Shadow 1100 - thought it was pretty comfortable -knees bother me after about 6 hours for some reason, hips pretty sore at days end too, but it all goes away by the next day - so back to back day long rides no problem on the Shadow.

THEN - rented a wee in NZ -- not sure how my knees would hold up bent so much - turns out the riding position of the wee was infinitely better and more comfortable than the cruiser. Except for adjusting to the switches, the wee was the easiest bike to ride that I have ever been on. Rented full dress HD's, Goldwings, BMW 1150GS, all good, but he wee, was like an old shoe.

I have a Big Vee and the Shadow now - poor Shadow get's neglected -too many good features (handling, braking, acceleration, comfort, ability to stand, and move around easily) that make the Vee much more enjoyable to ride.

I agree with Touring Dude, you should get used to the 'Strom in 1000 miles or less, but remember, that's only two day's riding. Two 500 mile days is nuthin on these bikes. :D

I know what you mean as i went from a Hardley-Dangerous Ultra dresser to my 03 DL1000... The first few times I felt like I was on a ladder and unsure...

Once I started trusting the MAGNIFICIENT handling character of the V-Strom and the torque of the 1000 CC engine there was no going back..... You will love it, give it time.

Welcome to the club. Congrats on trying something different! Put on 1,000 miles and you will be right at home.

I got into motorcycling on a honda shadow. Very pretty, and feels good for a little while, but I couldn't stand it for more than a few hours (lower back). I discovered I wanted to ride longer/farther, and the cruiser just didn't fit. It is amazing how many people are surprised when I explain this. I guess they figure those wide comfy looking seats will feel like a couch. Nope.

The V-Strom is the way!
