Someone was looking for info on the difference between the stock Vee (DL1000) and the Suzuki "Tall Touring Saddle." As I have both, I thought I'd throw this out there - and I'll say I was a little surprised myself.

The stock seat has very low mileage on it - the PO replaced it with a Corbin, and I replaced it with the TTS.

I've logged about 7000mi on the TTS, so I wonder if my big fat butt hasn't compressed it a little.

OK, some terrible photography with no prep (we're getting ready to move, forgive the lameness of this):

Stock on the left; TTS on the right.Note the cover on the TTS seems to have shifted - the seam which divides the riders and passenger's portion of the saddle looks like it's moved down into the rider's portion on the TTS. I normally have a sheepskin installed so never noticed this until today

They're both a little dusty - I was sweeping a bunch of MDF sawdust out of the garage before doing this.

Stock on the left, TTS on the right. Here again, you can see the seam looks to be in a different position on the TTS. Don't know if it's because the same cover is used on both and so doesn't fit exactly the same, if my TTS is defective, or if my cover has shifted around or compressed from usage - sorry.


Putting a stick from the center of the top of the front horn to the back center of the seat (dividing the seat in half width-wise), provides a way to compare seat height measurements.
Here's the TTS at about a 2 1/2" dish at it's maximum distance from the "plane" of the seat.


And the Stocker at 3 1/2".

A whole bunch of crap to say that, comparing my two seats, it looks like the TTS is only an inch higher.

Why that surprises me is that the difference feels like much more. A very astute observer will notice that the rubber bumpers are absent on my stock seat - removed or lost by PO, I assume. Maybe that accounts for the what feels like a lot more than an inch difference when sitting on the two seats.

The rider and pillion have equal portions of real estate each, and the pillion on the TTS seams to be the same height as the pillion on stock - all things equal, you would appear 1" taller to your pillion on the TTS vs. the stocker. AFAIK, the DL1k seat, DL650 seat, Suzuki gel, and Suzuki TTS are all built on the same pan.

I vaguely recall reading that the TTS has a gel pad, I'm not sure. Again, I have a sheepskin cover that stays on the seat at all times.
FWIW, my butt doesn't like either seat. The TTS may last a little longer, but that's a guess, and a biased one.
My knees and hips like the TTS much better: I'm about 6'4", 32 -34" inseam (weird build, huh?) and having the extra seat-peg distance is worth it for me.

If I had time and money, I'd be replacing the TTS with a custom seat - my wife recently decided we're going to sell our house and move, tho, so that's on hold for a while.

Which is which?

Ignore the title of my post.

Questions: Does anyone know if the Tall saddle has gel? I've searched a few times for that answer and was thinking that it didn't.

Steve, you said it helps your knees and hips, what about your lower back? My lower back kills when I do more than 200 miles in a day. Looking to remedy that and I thought the seat may help. I'm a few inches taller (and inseam it too) but we sound nearly the same size.

TallJeff, no, the Tall Touring Seat does not have gel. That is the Gel Seat. I have the Gel, and it is a vast improvement over the stock seat.

The reason the seat helped my knees and hips is because it allows me to be a little more stretched out. On the stock seat, my legs wind up pretty packed up (sport-bike style, almost), and would get stiff after a long ride.

That being the case, I don't know what it would do for your back. You need to figure out what riding posture is best for you back and adapt your bike to put you in that position. Moving bars, pegs, raising/ lowering seat, etc.

The TTS will raise your butt about an inch - maybe that changes your posture for the better - could make it worse, tho. Maybe it solves a hip/ knee problem for you, but creates a handle bar height problem in the process.

What surprised me was how much different that 1" feels. Fold up a towel so it's about 1" thick and throw that on your seat - see how it feels.

There is articles here or on VSRI about building custom saddles.I am long legged also and want to fill in the valley in the seat so that it is flat .:thumbup:

I should post a picture of the contraption I made for the stock seat. Glued a bunch of pieces of carpet padding together to fit in the "valley" of the stock seat.
Ugly as hell (I hid most of it under a sheepskin) but it did raise me up to where I wanted to be. Rode around with for a while until I got the TTS.

If I ever get a RDL, I plan to take pics with that thing on the seat, and send it along with my stocker for them to laugh at/ use as a template for height.

Thanks for the comparison on the seats! I'm 6'2" and am wondering what upgrades would be recommended for us tall folks on a Wee. I searched briefly on the topic, but I didn't come up with much. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I rode a 650 and had a 1k seat and the TTS. I found that the TTS was much more comfortable than the 1k seat. I liked the "flat" surface and found it really easy to move around on. I have a 32" inseam and had no issues with stops, but usually I'm a left foot down, right foot on the peg/brake. If I tried both feet, I was on the balls of my feet.

On the road, the increased seat/peg distance was nice, but something about the dish on the 1k seat made it torture for me after more than about 250 miles, while I was good for 1k+ miles at a crack on the TTS.

I thought the tall touring seat WAS the same as the 1000 seat. My understanding is there are three Suzuki seats:

stock 650
stock 1000 / aka TTS for the 650
gel

Not correct?

Stock 1000 (about 1" higher)
Gel (not sure of the height)
TTS (about 1.8" higher)

The Suzuki gel seat is higher than the stock Vee unit. The difference isn't as much as an inch, IIRC. It might be 1/2 inch higher or a bit more.
