I have a '07 650 with 18000 miles and just started noticing a crackling noise from what sounds like the dash area or below. I just changed out the speedometer face so I thought it might be something to do with that but speedometer is functioning correctly. It almost sounds like an electrical crackling but is not constant or even consistent. Any thoughts will be appreciated?

Thanks!

while in Motion? or idling? both?

I was sure I was loosing a front cam chain one day, turns out the front sprocket was coming loose...

I also had a weight inside the mirror come loose and start rattling... most annoying noise EVER.....
other cuplrits... the two bolts that hold the fairing to the steering head have been known to come loose and fall out...

do you have Givi Crashbars.... they can get loose where the two sides join by the oil cooler and the buzzy rattling from that is unbelievable...

Thanks gryphon51. It does it while in motion and I'm going to check all your possibilities now.

I am always surprised with the noises I'll tune in on after doing some work on the bike. Chances are it's just the forks popping and clunking as you ride.

The chain only has 2500 miles on it. Maybe it is me just being oversensitive. I hate noises that I can't identify that may even be normal.

I love my ear plugs! Keeps me from being frightened by the sounds a motorcycle can make. The Wee seems like the model of civility. My 650GS BMW has airbox honk that won't quit. Sounds like it's gonna blow!
Some motor sounds take getting used to, even though they are normal.

I used to freak out at the sound of the chain drive when riding next to a divider of some kind. It was hard to locate. Basically any noise echoes up between the bars. I thought it was the front sprocket doing it because i had switched to a sprocket without the rubber dampener, but when i replaced that with a rubber dampener version the noise was still there. Everything has been working fine, so i just ignore it now.

That was driving me nuts, right up until I read your post, thanks for clearing that up for me. I have about a 5 mile stretch on my commute every day in a construction zone, riding next to those concrete barriers I would hear this weird noise, as soon as I pass it was gone. Now I know what it is. Thanks.

This thread has caused me to hear a crackling sound as well. Riding in to work this morning I could swear that I now hear a new crackling sound coming from the front.

I am sure within a few days the noise will go away again, once I learn to tune it out.
