Last week brought the first warm weather and with it the first car-cyclist accident.

Luciano: Cyclist sore after pickup driver's hit'n'flee - News - Journal Star - Peoria, IL

I know this road/corner well, having ridden it many times as both a cyclist and motorcyclist. The corner is at the bottom of hills on either side so vehicles are tempted to take it too fast. However, it is NOT blind. You can see at least 100 yards around the corner from either direction. As bad as the outcome was for this cyclist, imagine how it might have ended for a motorcycle? Getting bashed off the road like that could be fatal with a 500 lb bike! As my wife and I did our first cycling of the season yesterday this crash stuck in my mind. Drivers here in the U.S. have acquired a nasty tendency to make lazy/fast turns that cut across oncoming lanes.

How often do we approach intersections expecting oncoming traffic to veer into our lane, maybe taking the whole thing? It's going to happen. Better expect it. One step we can take is to stop well short of the white line in left turn lanes.

Not just the US! Happens everywhere. Most drivers suck at basic skills, they watch way too much TV and think they can cut corners as though on a racetrack, only problem is that race tracks generally have one way flow of traffic.
Having learnt evasive defence driving skills decades ago, I adhere to my lane no matter what, 'cos you never know what numpty is coming the otherway and you can take corners just as fast if you turn into a corner and let the suspension take the load before the apex.
