I am considering a second bike (the wife approved it) for some fun stuff and the wee is on the short list. Most likely purchasing new (could be a leftover as there are lots in CT). 2014 dl650a advertized at $7K

I am 5'10", 260+ lbs with a 30.5 in inseam. I have been riding for over 20 years. BUT, I have only ever had one bike at a time.

1980 Suzuki gs450 - learner/starter bike,
1995 Harley softail - look at me I am cool :cool1:
2007 Harley Ultra - Big and comfy for the fat guy and the wife was willing to ride with me
2013 GoldWing - finally, a motorcycle I really like and the wife likes it too, expect to have this for 10 years or more. Anything long distance or two up, this will be what I ride.

Now I want something to play with and commute. I like the adventure style bikes as they will allow me sit up comfortably and provide for some entertainment if I decide to hammer some twisties or take a dirt/gravel road. I do not expect I will be doing any trail style riding. If I decide that is what I want, I will buy a smaller bike to learn how to do it right. Mileage is a consideration but not paramount. The wife may come out for a quick ride to the local eatery but over a few miles and the wing is the choice.

The only thing that makes me hesitate purchasing the weestrom is engine power. Outside of the learner bike, gobs of roll on power has always been available to me. Due to my size, I expect a shock/spring is in order. I will be taking a test ride if the temps ever get over 40 degrees (I ride the wing under 30 degrees but the wee does not offer the same protection or have heated grips (yet)).

Thoughts?

PS - the only other bike on my short list is a Tiger 800.

I weight a little more than you and find the power adequate. I did customise the suspension which I think is a must is you plan on 2 up riding.
My wife and I ride 2 up comfortably enough.
It doesn't have gobs full of roll on power however it really isn't that kind of bike anyway.

Not to knock the v-strom I love mine but if I was buying a new bike I don't think I'd consider it anymore. The new Versys looks like a fun bike and the new Yamaha FJ-09 looks about perfect for what I'd want.

I've only been riding for 2 years, first year was a ninja 500 and this year was a v-strom 650. I find the power to be pretty underwhelming on the v-strom. It's not by any means slow but it's not fast either, one thing it has going for it is that it's very smooth.

1. The $7K is a good price but probably doesn't include some charges the dealer will add.

2. I too am about 260 pounds but 34" inseam.

3. If nearly all your riding will be at a true 65-70 MPH a Wee is fine. I spend lots of time at 60-70 MPH on mine and have to watch or it will go above that rather quickly. If you'll be on high-speed freeways mostly I'd probably go with a 1000. When I'm running 75-80 MPH acceleration from that speed isn't great.

4. I know some guys here change suspension components but I haven't. I probably don't know what I'm missing. Maybe someone else who knows more about this will comment.

Tenny, Thanks. both the Versys and FJ-09 were on the long list but speed is not my main goal and both of these make no pretense of anything other street bikes. I definitely want to able to hit the "unimproved roads".

2 wheel, I do not expect gobs of power from the 650, I just do not want to be underwhelmed (so to say). Knowing you are similar in size gives me some comfort, thanks. and two up is done on the wing, the wife will not like this bike as she prefers the queen seat.

Probably off in the weeds but f you are looking for a real change of pace, consider a Suzuki DR650 instead. Personally I found it ton's of fun around town, probably the most pure and simple 2 wheel fun for me. A V-Strom is not all that far from a Goldwing in many respects ...

Just saying, take time to look around!

Oh, I had a Goldwing, 2 DL650, and a DR650 in the recent past. Just the DL650 now, and it is a sweet bike.

I think you are on the weeds! I ride a ST1300 and I found the Wee-Strom a COMPLETELY different bike to ride. There is absolutely no comparison between the two. I also found the Vee-Strom completely different but with much more power. That said, I too am looking to compliment my ST1300 with a Glee or Vee, but they are in no way similar my friend.

I have been riding Yamaha FJR 1300 AS 08 for 6 years now and it is a wonderful touring bike. However, after doing some test rides, I also added to it a DL650 2014 just before Christmas as the local dealer made me an extremely good offer. This is aimed for city commute and gravel roads around my summer house. Will keep the Feejer, but it is far too heavy for city or gravel. Test rides proved the Glee to be completely adequate in terms of power, speed and comfort, haven't had a chance to try my own new bike yet as there is snow all over. So I would encourage the OP to go for it.

The Tiger 800 is a fabulous bike (not that the V Strom isn't), but considering your size and weight, I think the Triumph would be a much better choice. It is a delightful engine, and has tons of power, with an excellent, smooth power band. You will find that the triple gives you more useful power in the mid range that that 650 motor does (you will not find yourself shifting as much). Either bike is a great machine. How about considering the 1000 V Strom ? Your inseam is long enough for that seat height.

Look at the new 1000, it has 650 size and weight with much more power and fun factor. ;)

Sat on the dl650 and dl1000 today. The 650 looks a bit small under me but was much more comfortable. Hopefully I will be test riding next weekend. Hoping for 40 degrees in CT.

Meick, thanks for the thought, if I wanted to be trail riding, the DR would be on the list. I am going to be 90% street and maybe 10% gravel roads.

Big B, the 1000 is not out of the equation completely. Just not sure I want/need the 1000. This is my second bike, I have a big bike already. Plan to test ride the wee-strom and tiger 800. If the 650 feels sufficient, I am in. If not, I try the tiger and as long as I like it, I buy it. If I do not like the tiger 800, then the 1000 comes into play. I really want to keep the vehicle weight down and gas mileage up if possible which is why the 1000 is probably third on the list. So far.... Maybe I don't like any of them and need to modify my list completely.

The new 1000 is as nimble, handles overall better and feels like it weighs less or about the same as the 650 Strom........trust me on that. Too much power to have on tap if needed......surely not. ;) The 1000 averages in the mid 40's or better, what is not to like about that, and many of the other choices you have listed will do no better or if much at all. :fineprint:

Big B, thanks for the information, it is helpful to know it handles better than the 650. The 1000 did feel much heavier standing still but it "fit" me a little better. I prefer to get a small bike (remember I have a GoldWing) which is why I am preferring the 650 first. Plus it gets 15+ better MPGs, the 2015 tiger gets similar mileage with power similar to the 1000 but I am not sure I am up for the whine of a triple at high RPM. The cost between the Tiger and the 1000 is minimal but the new tiger has quite a bit more gadgetry

I am set up for a test ride on both the 650 and 1000 once the temps come up so we will need to see how they feel. I just need to get my Triumph dealer on board so I can make the best decision.

Another question, anyone have issues with running multiple "gadgets"? (heated grips, heated gear, GPS, extra lighting...)

Thanks again, I have been reading stuff on this forum and find it to be useful information.
