I am planning to travel Canada and the USA this summer and was thinking to get a Vstrom 1000 for it. I will be riding over 90% on road with some fire road/timber roads. I figured that the Vstrom would be a good choice because of the ABS, TC, and ICU to keep me from going down after long days of riding (or bad weather or just mistakes...) and also from what I can tell this is a good bike for long distances as well as going into the twisties. My biggest question is the normal Vstrom vs the XT (spoked rims) since I will be mainly on road I get the feeling that I would be better with cast rims and not spoked (truing and the like as well as less rigidity). On a side note I am coming from a CB1000RA and have been riding for 6 years. Also if people can comment on how this bike is for riding more aggressive on stuff like the tail of the dragon or mulholland highway as I plan to do both along with a lot of other very twisty roads. Any input would be greatly appreciated . Thank you all in advance for the help.

I don't own the vstrom 1000, so I can't comment on the bike itself, but I think you are spot on about going with the cast wheels. I would for sure go that route for a touring purpose.

Keep in mind that the vstrom 1000 takes 93 octane ( or premium) gasoline, as most bikes in that size do. It's one of the reasons I've kept my vstrom 650, because it's just so much cheaper to run on a long trip. This may not matter to you though. By many accounts it seems the 1000 is the better long distance touring bike, so you sort of get what you pay for apparently.

If it's anything like the 2014 (and I believe it is, only supposed to be a little better) it will be quite capable for what you want to do. I raised the forks about 10mm and am very happy with how it handles in the twisties. (Honestly I can't say how much better that is than stock since I did it so long ago.) If possible, get the bike a couple months ahead of your trip so you can sort out things like luggage, seat, windscreen, lowered pegs, heated grips, etc.
