Good afternoon Stromtrooper forum members,

I've been considering buying a Vstrom for awhile and I'm finally shopping around.

I've found a 2009, 650cc, with 17xxx mi., with most accessories already installed. I believe it may be a 1 owner bike as well but haven't confirmed. I have confirmed, no accidents and no evidence of laying it down. They are asking a very reasonable price, IMO.

The only thing that concerns me, because I'm purchasing out of state and feeling anal, is that the header on exhaust looks very worn, but I think it's just the pictures. Also, in one of the pictures sent to me, the oil pressure light is on. I've asked that they send me a video of the bike idling in neutral to prove that the oil light goes off after bike start. Anyone's thoughts on this?

My other questions for you great folks are:

1. What are the biggest things to look for on these bikes when buying used?

2. Has anyone ever had a bike, Vstrom or not, shipped around the country? I'm looking for recommendations.
3. Has anyone ever installed the Russell Day Long seat? How does it compare with the stock seat?

4. If I do buy the bike, what's the first thing I should do maintenance-wise. I'm thinking typical fluid changes and check tires/chain?

Here's some pics:

Thank you everyone in advance for any insight and assistance with my purchase. I very much like the idea of a Vstrom as a commuter/tourer for around my area.

Oil light comes on and stays on until bike is started (at least on my 07). While I don't personally care for the looks of that seat, it looks like it could be comfy and have heard good things about them (I just swapped my factory seat out for a used Sargent seat that has a similar driver profile -wider flatter bike seat thing. A factory seat could be found pretty cheap used, I think there is one on this site for $50, another local near me for $65 like new) Header is fine, its probably seen some water while being hot is all. Looks like it has a lot of add-ons and if the price is good it might be worth shipping it I think it costs around $500 or so. Its got aux lights which is good for visibility, crash bars, ram mount and aftermarket narrower givi e21 side bags (top loaders).

Price isn't too bad, but a little high IMO, I just pulled it up on cycle trader. Id try to get OTD for 4K personally. A good negotiating tool would be the valve inspection and adjustment due at 14,500 miles. Doubtful its been done and would likely run in the $500 range or a little more but you could probably do it yourself with some of the writeups around. IMO people that farkle up their bikes like that probably maintain them reasonable well, but also use them. I wouldn't let the mileage scare you off though. I just bought mine with 13K and as far as I can tell it runs like a brand new one would. But ya valves would be on the list as well as coolant flush, brake fluid flush, air filter and oil change just depending on what has been done. Check chain sprockets etc. Tires look decent.

BTW with these bikes when protected with crash bars its pretty hard to tell if they have been down. I looked at a few Stroms and they had all been down. Mines been down on both sides according to the scuffs on the factory luggage, everything else looks like new without any scratches on the pegs...They must fall "gracefully" or engineered well considering what can be used for.

Not sure where you live, but if you are near some decent market areas buying from a private party can be a bonus in terms of price and meeting the previous actual owner, and where I am a huge tax savings buying private party. I kind of enjoy the "hunt" though too, and before buying mine I had been looking for awhile before finding the right deal, ubt I wasn't in a hurry because my back-up plan was a new MT09 or a new old stock DL650 2017.

Thanks for the quick reply.

What you say about oil light is exactly what I've read. I have a feeling that's all was the case when they took that picture, that key was in ignition but bike was off.

Supposedly, this bike is on consignment for the dealer owner's cousin. Agreed that it does appear to be well maintained but who really knows.

Regarding price, they're offering it to me for a hair under $3500. That said, I'll keep in mind what you say negotiating valve checks. I've done stuff like that on smaller engines but never a motorcycle. Would probably take it somewhere. I'm still waiting on what their OTD price would be about.

I'm investigating shipping options, starting with uShip. Seems that different companies just send you quotes. I've also considered just going to pick the bike up and driving it the 1000mi. back but I think that may be irresponsible...

at 3500 (that sounds a lot better to me) that would probably put you OTD around 4K or just a little over. If you were to buy all the add-ons separately they would add up quickly. From what Ive read the valve check is really easy if you take your time. It just takes patients and removing a lot of stuff. At the same time I'm not sure I want to dive into either when mine is due :grin2:

1000 miles is a LONG way jeez. Nothing closer to you? I was going to mention renting a motorcycle trailer but jeez that's a long haul. Pretty sure some of the dealer sites Ive seen advertise shipping anywhere for $450 so might inquire the dealer about shipping or if there is a larger dealer in that area inquire with them.

here's another but in NY

At 3500 that seems like a great deal to me. The Wee's are know to be bullet proof and that bike is nicely equipped. Don't be afraid of the valves they most likely won't even need to be adjusted. Checking them is easy if you have decent mechanical skills. Changing out the header pipe, if needed, which I doubt, easy. And take it from an old guy, take the risk, ride it home on the back roads at a leisurely pace and make a memory. Also, if you join the American Motorcycle Association with your credit card you will get road side assistance included in the price.

Best, Allen

Seems like a good number for the bike with those accessories installed. A Russell Day Long set up for 2-up riding, nice!
If you don't want that seat, let me know...the wife and I have been talking about that addition and I have an extra original seat from my 2009 Wee...also in the best color!
Tires look good, if well maintained the chain & sprockets are about 1/2-2/3 way through serviceable life. Givi has quite a few options for different bags using the same racks so you could change to larger if wanted.
Good luck with purchase. I agree with stal1us that a fly/bus/limo & ride home would make for a great memory!
K9 Wee

My 09 was shipped to me by dealer from North Carolina and my wife's 93 Honda was shipped to us from Connecticut. No issues with either...dealer in both instances found a shipper and quoted me a number...memory is 400 for the Wee and 350 for the Honda.

Again, thank you everyone for the advice, very helpful at settling some worries I have.

Regarding: Shipping vs. Travel + Ride Home
I hear you on the distance, it's quite daunting. Part of my reasoning, was this will act as my summer vacation. I would plan enough time out to where stops/repairs wouldn't be an issue. Of course, the idea is that repairs won't be needed....

I've been on CycleTrader a bit the last 2 months and it's been sorta hard to find a bike that checks all my boxes. Because of some issues with my bank (truly frustrating because I'm financially fit, just not for an outright purchase) I've been inquiring about financing through dealers and making aggressive payments. That's the main reason I haven't been looking at private sale, I just don't think it's an option for me. For whatever reason, this bike really caught my eye initially and then especially so once I learned what they were really asking for it. The distance is really the only problem.
@K9wee - I'd be interested in knowing who you got quotes through and what company ended up shipping your bikes. I'm located very close to you in Richmond, VA. This bike would be coming from MS. Sub 500 was around what I'm expecting for quotes. Did you notice any issues with the way the bikes were packed and secured? That's my main worry, damage in transit.

Still waiting on confirmation that the engine/oil light is a non-issue. I've just seen some shady sales tactics in the past. I'm feeling pretty confident about everything else.

If they can do the deal financing you as needed, and you like the bike I’d say jump on it. I never finance any “toys” just because unless buying new the interest rates are high if they will lend at all. They don’t want to be the new owner of a boat, bike, etc.

If you wanted to make a trip out of it it could be fun but it might be about even in terms of cost to get out there to ride the bike back. You would need gear (rain etc). I wouldn’t worry about reliability at all as far as riding it 1000 miles (it’s barely broke in in terms of mileage lol). If you really want them to send you proof of the oil light going off call them and have them text you a vid of it turning off when it starts. Mine does stay lit until I start my bike. I like the color a lot, and you are saving some serious cash on farkles if you like what is has. I’m in the market for some side cases like that for mine. I have the full factory luggage and the larger side cases that I have are huge and I prefer top loading. Good luck. I really like mine, it’s probably the best all-around and definitely most comfortable to ride motorcycle I’ve ever owned and I’ve had a few.

There is a 2017 650 with 1 mile on it for $5,995.00 at a dealer in Las Vegas. Ridenow Craig.
Considering the age of this bike compared to a "brand new" 2017 current model I would say the price is too high.

In both instances the shipper was found and provided by the dealer....no issues with delivery. My Wee came on a brand new landscape trailer minutes ahead of a massive rain front....literally took bike off trailer, started, shut off and wheeled to my garage as the skies opened up. Think it may have been the dealer's college-aged kid who brought my bike here, lol. My wife's came in a Mercedes Hi-Top van and had zero issues. I would not hesitate to ship a bike as there is insurance for that and there is a vested interest in having you receive it without issue.
I think you could get some quotes via the web but would try to make it a part of the sale so the dealer is the one to make arrangements and deal with shipper, etc. Also, then your ownership would actually begin on delivery.
Hope it works out for you...the Wee is a proven platform with tons of support from the rider community as well as from the accessories world.

I hear you Plateau. I've contacted them and asked for such. The added accessories, and the clean appearance, are what's really pushing this bike.

Coach -- I've seen that one and was actually seriously considering it because the price on CycleTrader is $4,499. Las Vegas is even further than Mississippi though and the cost is just too much I fear. Additionally, I'm too much of a sucker for that yellow/gold XT.

I have a feeling I'll be pursuing shipping options and not trying to make the trip back. More crunching to do...

I'll keep everyone updated. Thanks and cheers.

@K9\ Wee -- I hear you. Unfortunately, the dealer in MS doesn't do shipping anymore. I have a listing on uShip though.

Still waiting to hear from MS dealer about finance options...

Was hoping for some opinions on something else though...

Dealer near me, in state, has a 2016 new old-stock. They said they can OTD at $7350 but I think I could probably get them to go even lower. They've already mentioned they have only 2 left that they're trying to move.

Should I investigate more on this? Initially, I was looking at new cause I like the Gen3 look with 2017/18/19. Now, I'm not sure a 2016 model would be worth the hefty price tag just for new status. What could I expect to negotiate down to? Would $6300 be unreasonable offer from me?

Have you seen 2009 in For Sale section here? Perhaps you can get it for $3000 with 1/3 of the mileage of the one you found.

Definitely looks good, I'd be interested. Can anyone chime in about the CHEC indicator on gauge? Something to worry about?

Chec indicator comes on when key is turned on and sidestand is down with bike in gear or if the kill switch is not in the run position. Nothing to worry about...I saw that ad...close enough to go get yourself! Jump on that one, lol

Gotcha, I wasnt sure if it was part of the ignition sequence or maintenance related. Yeah I'm definitely considering it. The mileage is very nice.

Bummer... I don't have sufficient access to For Sale yet in order to post and say that I'm PMing the seller...

Sorry for spam...

Also frustrating: Tried to send PM twice to the seller but don't see any sent items in my profile history. Have no idea if they're receiving them..
