I've been chatting with my girlfriend (rides a 2006 FZ6) about my next bike being more touring oriented. I currently ride a 2005 SV650S. I've put over 32k miles on it (we ride about 10k to 15k a year). Mostly commuting and in the warmer weather we do a lot of 150 to 300 mile days.

I've been contemplating which V-strom to get, the 650 or 1000. I've vowed to myself that I'd never buy a 1000cc sportbike, (as in, no honda F4i or RR or whatever) and I'm stuck in-love with the V-twin.

My goal is to get a more touring type bike that has at least as much power as my SV650S, but not a whole ton more. I'm afraid that the V-strom 650 might feel a little underpowered compared to my SV, but perhaps the v-strom 1000 will be too powerful for my tastes.

I haven't test ridden any form of the v-strom, but I have ridden my girlfriend's FZ6 and that bike great for the comfort, but has too much engine for my riding style.

So, how much more powerful is the DL-1000 compared to the 650? Also, is the v-strom 650 noticeably different in power than my SV650S? Has anyone ridden both extensively?

I'm not going to sell my SV650S, it's just too much fun. But I want a 2nd bike I can use for pretty much all of my 150+ mile trips with both freeway and canyon carving riding.

I'd really appreciate some input/thoughts.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that when my girlfriend and I are riding on our longer trips we use my SV650S for carrying all of the gear. I have saddlebags and also a mesh net on the rear seat. I'm always carrying stuff when I ride. And I'm about 5'8" and 140lbs.

I have a 2002 SV650S as well as a 2006 DL650. Understand that the motor is pretty much the same, with a little different gearing. The other major difference is the riding position and the center of gravity. Imagine your SV just a little slower, feeling a LOT bigger, in a normal sitting position. Nice, huh?

The FZ6 isn't far off the SV650S, so it really shouldn't be that much of a change for you. The DL1000 engine is taken from the TL1000, so it is about 30+ HP over your current SV650s. I think you will find the DL650 will suit you just fine. See if you can find a dealer, board member, or friend ride the DL650 and see how you like it. I'm sure there is someone in the Seattle area that can hook you up with a test ride.

It was a 70 mile bike swap with GrayWolf that sold me.

I said the same thing. I've put 50 miles on my SVS since I got the DL650 2 years ago. Sadly, the SV is going up for sale. I want someone to have it that will ride it on a regular basis and really enjoy it. Besides, I need the cash for a DR or KLR.

Thanks for the great reply. I'm glad to hear from another SV rider.

After making my first post I read a lot through the boards here. I think it could be possible for me to consider trading in my SV for the DL650. I don't believe the DL1000 would suite me, I prefer the lower seat, lighter weight of the 650. I put a high value on weight and height of a bike vs the power.

I will have to sit on one and test ride now I suppose. Although I'm pretty sure my mind has settled on the DL650.

I owned a 2006 SV650 (naked) and now have a 2006 Wee Strom. The DL650 is a very surprising bike! It's 95% as quick as the SV for real world riding, and way more comfortable. Ad to that the ability to take it on Forest Roads and two-tracks, load it up with hard bags and other goodies, and it can't be beat.

I haven't ridden a DL1000 since '02 so I can't comment.

The looks will grow on you, too.;)

'shark, I too was/am weighing the 1K vs Wee and like you I'm leaning Weeward.

The lower seat height is just the seat which is interchangable between the models. I suppose there are many 1000 riders out there with the lower 650 seat.

The 1000 did feel a bit heavier to me when I rode one but only in parking lots and in some low speed corners. If you put a high value on weight of a bike, you would probably notice it. The weight issue aside, the two bikes feel nothing alike to ride. The motors are so different.

I can't say about the power of the DL650 vs. the SV650S because it has been about 3 years since I rode a standard SV650 but Tige and Sock Puppet seem to have that part covered. As far as the DL1000 goes, it has quite a bit more power than the DL650 but I rarely miss the power of my 1000 since I traded to the 650. It is no slouch which was my biggest concern going from the 1000 to 650. The 1000 holds its biggest advantage in 80-100+ speeds where it will walk away from the 650 but by then you're in big ticket territory. I had my 1000 with both 650 and the stock seats and the 650's is lower but I don't think the height is a valid issue in making your choice - there is very little difference between the 650 and 1000 as it's all in the seats which have the same pan and can be switched out. What is noticeable is the feel of how they carry their weight. While the weight difference is not too big, the 650 feels quite a bit lighter to me which is what drove me to make the switch. It changes direction quicker than the 1000. The smoothness of the 650 motor is also what attracted me to make the change. The 1000 is no thumper but the 650 is sewing-machine smooth, something you probably already know from your SV.

My first bike was an '03 SV650s. I loved that copper color!

I went to the DL650 a few months ago. More comfortable, just as much power (given the bike weighs a little more you can't really tell the difference). Since your body weight is low you won't notice much of a difference speed wise.

The reason I went with the wee vs. the vee is the overall gas mileage. 10mpg or so difference doesn't sound like much, but if you plan on using this as a commuter those 10mpg more adds up over time!

My two cents..............

Before buying, I rode the Wee and the Vee, back to back, Wee first.

The Wee is surprisingly good, I was sold, just couldn't believe how good this bike went, handled, felt, etc. etc.

Back at the dealers, took out the Vee, noticeably heavier until you're moving, after that, for me, no contest, I bought the Vee - it's fantastic ! ! ! ! ! !

A Wee would have been enough, but I think 6 months to a year on, I would have regretted not buying the Vee.
