I have a sweet 02 DL1000 with 30000KM that makes a slight knocking type noise while the clutch is out. Once it is engaged it stops. Does anyone out there now what the cause would be? I might open it up over the winter to fix or adjust. Looking for input!

Probably the known "issue" called idle hammer. If this is the noise you hear it isn't a mechanical issue just a noise inherent to the bike, late '04's and newer come with a different clutch cover with sound dampening material to reduce the noise. Some people find the noise goes away or is mitigated if the oil level is kept at the full mark.

Thanks for the info...I'm not sure its the hammer you discribe...it is a mild knock that goes away as soon as you touch the clutch or engage it slightly....any other thoughts??

If when you lightly load up the engine by letting out the clutch at idle against first gear, the sound disappears or you raise the RPMS over 2-2.5K, the sound disappears then it is the idle hammer. And is inherent to the V-twin particulary those with a long firing interval, 450 degrees for the 1000.

If it doesn't fit the above I would guess the maybe idle/scissor spring at the primary gear or maybe excess wear to the clutch basket and your hearing additional clutch rattle, but again think of a Ducati and the noise the clutches make on those bikes even though they are dry instead of wet as on our bike, they make a hell of a racket due to the V-twin and firing stroke loading/unloading.
