For the 2nd time in 3 years (Spring 2013 & this year), the clutch fluid in my '03 DL1000 completely drained during winter storage. Last time, I had the local shop pick the bike up & re-fill. This time I'd like to try fixing it myself.

First thing I have to do, obviously, is re-fill the line so I can at least start shifting gears. I did this on a previous bike with a service manual and help from a forum similar to this. For my V, however, I don't have a service manual.

Is such a repair possible without a manual? I have a vague idea of what do do - could someone talk me through the process?

The next step would be to find out why this happens and fix that. Maybe I need a manual.

It's a simple job.

Top up the reservoir and bleed the system as you would brakes.

In all likelihood, the slave cylinder piston was cocked at an angle when parked which allowed the fluid to drain out (could be a sign of a worn cylinder wall). Or the piston seal is worn out. You want to change the seal before refilling anyway.

Remove the two bolts holding the slave cylinder and pull it away from the bike. Pull the piston out of the cylinder and pop a new seal on (they only cost a few bucks). Slap it all back together, refill, and bleed.

the lazy way is to fill the resevoir and pump the clutch lever rather slowly and the level should go down as the rest of the system receives the fluid. Refill as needed and keep pumping the lever. Not very sophisticated, but often works. However, like the other poster indicated, you might want to check for leaks and fix it before you get stuck somewhere.
