Clutch Failure?

7046 Views 60 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  The Revelator
I'm on the side of the road writing this.

I'm 35 miles from home on a rainy day. I make a right turn and let out the clutch and start to go. Than without warning I got no power to the rear wheel. Every gear is the same. I put it on the center stand the wheel will spin freely while in gear.
Is this a sudden clutch failure or something worse?
I'm waiting for a tow, but I want to get this fixed this weekend as it's my only way to get to work.

I'm open to phone call suggestions.

That was my first thought. I checked both this morning.
Maybe the actuator pushrod is not fully releasing?
Did you change the oil recently?
Is the oil motorcycle oil for wet clutches?
Maybe the piston in the slave cylinder is hanging up
whats the fluid level look like? Is it dirty?
does the lever feel normal?

I'll check that. I put new fluid in a few hundred miles ago.

I changed the oil a few hundred miles ago. Yes, it's for a wet clutch.
Is there a bunch of mud packed into the front sprocket cover ?
some might have found it’s way into the actuator rod housing and is hanging it up?
Did your oil maker reformulate with friction modifiers like rotella did for some viscosities?
Did you also change the oil at the same time as the fluid?
API SL JASO MA2 oil. I don't know if they reformulated it.
Yes, I did the brake, clutch and oil at 33,000 miles. I'm around 33,400 now.

There's a bit of crap packed in there, but nothing crazy.

Oil should be fine.
Id check that the actuator rod isn’t hanging up, If there isn’t enough fluid the piston could stick out , but the actuator rod should force it back in.
Maybe the clutch plates got burned up
Very odd that the clutch would fail 'released' usually when things go wrong the clutch would be engaged and you would be unable to release it. Are you sure the bike is not stuck in neutral? how does the clutch lever feel when pulling it in, normal or no resistance.
just throwing this out there, Let us know what you find.

Id pull the clutch cylinder off first thing and see what’s going on with the actuator.
If thats all good, maybe the clutch burned up.
Did some water from the rain make its way into the oil? That will cook a clutch.

My tow will be here on about 30 minutes. I am skipping work today over this. I'll pull the slave off once I am home. Hopefully I'll update in 2 hours.
Strange it happened all at once though.

Japanese/Suzuki clutches are boringly reliable. I am thinking the service done here is what triggered the failure. Very unlikely this was a coincidence.

It might be the sprocket. The sprocket nut was spinning independently of the sprocket when I did a test just now.

That's a rare failure too but it matches your symptoms. Hopefully its just the sprocket splines and not a damaged output shaft.

Good luck

Well, the sprocket is missing its spline teeth. No idea how that happened. I don't ride that hard.

Luckily I have a spare.
