Location: rural area southwest of Ft. Worth, Texas.

Since October 6th, I have been working a crazy shift. I leave my house around 2:30 AM and ride to work. If it's clear, I ride the V.

It has become a little "brisk" with the temps in the 40s. This morning was no different.

I have questioned the V's lights, wondering just how well they work travelling at hiway speeds. That question was answered this morning.

I first noticed Bambi in the weeds on driver's left. The devil eyes glowed that flourescent red as she wandered onto the pavement, still in the left lane. Her momentum took her to the middle of the road, straddling the double yellow line. This is where she stopped, looking like "a deer in the head lights". As I got closer, she turned and trotted back the same way she came.

All that happened as I was travelling close to 70mph, saw the deer in the lights, grabbed the brakes and reduced speed to under 20mph ... too slow for 2nd gear, anyway.

So in that very few seconds of time, I reduced my speed ~50mph with plenty of room and never really taxed the bike. My heart never really fluttered. I never got closer than 50 feet from her.

Conclusion? There is plenty of head light and brake on a 1K V-Strom. My confidence in the platform is renewed. But I alos know that alert diligence played a HUGE role.

Be careful out there folks.

Glad to hear you had no incident.

I was coming home from a gig last night (in my cage as I can't figure out how to pack my drum kit on the Wee :D ) about 3AM. Driving in a very rural area and I saw a deer off the left side of the road looking like it was ready to bound across at any moment. It clearly saw me coming but it did not move until I honked my horn a few times. Then it turned 180 and ran off back into the woods.
I sometimes randomly beep my Wee's horn when riding around the back roads here in the hopes that if there is a deer around the corner, perhaps it will hear the horn and run off.
Always cover the brake and scan...... man, I hate deer!

ALL deer need to be exterminated!!! I try not to ride much after dark this time of year, too may possible deer encounters. The deer in Ohio are the size of small horses!

Yes....the stock headlights are EXCELLENT.
