Chineasium top case

1st off let me start off by saying I do not like top cases. I have bought several bike that top cases came with (different materials and brands) and disliked them all. THey are typically one of the 1st things I sell off.

This year I have a couple upcoming trips and have found I need a bit more space as I have to take some additional things with me that were never needed before. SO not wanting to spend a ton of money on a name brand top case because after all fundamentally they are all boxes (metal and/or plastic) with hinges and lids. ITs one of the reasons I bought Tusk panniers. Those $250 aluminium boxes hold stuff just as well as the $2000 OEM panniers on my GSA.

Out of top cases I found I really disliked the plastic one's like Givi Monokey (took one to Labrador) as they just look like bulbous art deco globs of plastic and out place on a motorcycle. So that limited me to aluminium and since I was not going with a big name limited my choices even further. On a whip I typd in motorcycle top case into Amazon search bar and there were several choices. I think they are all made in the same sweat shop just branded differently. Although I would have preferred a natural finish the black finish cases were $20 and since its a necessary evil and not a want I chose to not spend the additional $20 I order it last Thursday and it arrived on Friday. Pulled it out of the box (very well packed) and turn out the case i pretty stout. I was thinking it might have been made out of old flattened out beer cans but pleasantly surprised at the metal thickness. Corners have tie-downs (that i'll never use) and they seem adequate for holding down stuff like your camp chair. The top case also came with a nice mounting adapter, back pad, padded/pocketed liner, and all the needed mounting hardware. Latchers are easy to work and easy to remove/install on the bike in seconds. It took about 30 minutes to get everything lined up and tightened and in the end this case is really nice especially for the $199 price tag. I did see today that there is another brand on sale for $189. Sure makes it hard to justify spending $900 the name brands want.

If you are looking for a top case that punched above its price point these 45L cases off Amazon are right up your alley.

Looks pretty solid. I wonder how that lining will hold up, is it removable?

Topcases are wonderful as long as they're filled with lightweight stuff.

Lining is removable. It's certainly better than the liner you do not get with the $900 name brand cases

MIne will be filled with a CPAP machine, boot dryers and maybe a sweatshirt.
Here's also the same case under the Iproods brand for $10 cheaper:

Probably made in the same factory as those $900 cases.

Not bad. The one in the link is the same price for silver or black. If I didn't already have a 47 liter Kappa trunk, I would pop on this. If the liner holds up, it looks nice and is functional.

I'm a big fan since I can put my backpack with laptop for work inside during commute.
Another option for those allergic to extremely high prices of the factory gear are the DeWalt tool boxes.

Pros, very inexpensive, waterproof in real life, very sturdy, locks with a padlock, pretty good variety in sizes. Also makes a pretty decent bench to sit on around the camp.
Cons: Zero mounting hardware so you're on your own. Looks like a stout plastic tool box. Nothing sexy or aerodynamic in the least.
I line the inside of my boxes with that white high density plastic foam used for wrapping packages before posting.

It helps to stop stuff moving around but the best part is it makes seeing inside the box much easier, the white color reflects the available light.

Apache cases from HF are also cost effective especially if you wait for a 20% off sale. The lack of cost effective quick mount hardware sucks. If you factor in the hardware from Caribou then the savigs quickly vaporizes.

On my Tusk panniers I bought two 6" battery powered LED undercounter lights that fit perfectly under the rim of the panniers. Great for at night when rooting around the bottom of the pannier.
If you put a cheap LED headlamp in the top of each box, it solves the light issue. Costco usually has them on for pretty good price. The last ones I got were rechargeable or battery powered. Cost $22.00 Cdn and came with 6 AAA batteries.

Added bonus is that you can use the lamps for other things like working on the bike, around camp, etc.
I must have 10 of these things scattered amongst the bikes, car, truck, tool box, junk drawer in the kitchen, etc.
It’s like everything else made in the country that would like to conquer us. Somebody else does the R&D. Somebody else develops the market. Somebody else struggles selling low volume until the market grows. Then the people that hate us copy it.

I won’t buy Chinese based on price alone. They get my money only when there is no alternative.

Ya I'll bet the party leaders are just rubbing their hands together over the prospects of all the slave labor
they'll get out of all the fat lazy fecker's here in north America.

The Chinese don't want to conquer us, We have already conquered ourselves.
They need us just as we are, over fed, self-indulgent and lazy, endlessly trying to fill the hole in our lives
with countless gadgets and bobbles believing that it somehow means were free.

40 years ago everything being said about the Chinese economic system would be being said about Japan.
What are you riding these days.

It’s hard for me to tell if we agree or not. I personally think North Americans are just fine. We don’t harvest organs yet.

Japan is an ally of ours that we need in that portion of the world. In 40 more years I might feel differently about China.

.I'm not sure how much technology or intellectual property could have been stolen or borrowed to create these as like all panniers and top boxes they are boxes with lids, latches and hinges.

Then the people that we are told hate us copy are hired to make it.

That’s OK with me. I’ll gladly pay more for another country to make it.

I’m sure China bought a “quality” box and took it apart. Laid the sheetmetal out flat and stole the geometry and dimensions needed to set up their own press/break equipment.
I’ve been looking at them haven’t pulled the trigger. My plastic one is fine but I like the matching box. My toy list is too long right now.

My favorite is Klim gear. Priced like its being sold in Saks Fifth Avenue and made in a Vietnamese sweatshop.

Clothes are tough. I didn’t mean to poke you in the eye over your case either.

It’s hard to find friendly countries to trade with and we have grown dependent on low quality, disposable goods now.

Good luck you young guys.
