Are there any known common problems with the charging system on a 2009 DL1000 V-Strom? If so, what is the best solution for correcting or upgrading? Thanks. I'm considering entering the Strom world and the bike I have in mind has had some intermittent charging gremlins.

Lots of problems reported, mainly with the stator.

You need to get a voltage reading at the battery at about 4000rpm.

If your battery is bad you may never get a true reading but it is a good place to start.

If you do a search on this site you will find lots of posts on how to test your stator.

Fitting a volt meter to your bike is a good idea.

Redwing, you used a couple key words: HAD, and INTERMITTENT. If the bike has intermittent charging issues, check the magnets. They probably have come loose and need the JBWeld modification to glue them in place and keep them equally separated. The other word you used, HAD, indicates the owner may have fixed, or at least attempted to fix, these issues? What is the owner saying has already been checked, fixed, or replaced? Three things make up the biggest issues with charging: Battery, R/R, stator. Get the battery load tested at a store like Advance Auto or AutoZone. You'll quickly know if the battery is worth keeping. Then move on to the other two. Look through this forum or just use Google, because there are about three tests with a handheld multimeter that you can do on these -- some with the bike running and some with the bike off. And, most definitely, as mentioned above, install a volt meter on your dash. This will not stop or fix your charging problems, but it will alert you to potential issues while riding.

Let us know what you discover.

Intermittent suggests a bad connection somewhere. Could be just a matter of tightening up the battery connections.

Nevertheless, there are known issues with the flywheel/rotor magnets coming loose. You'll need to see to this regardless. At most you'll be out a few hundred bucks for a stator and/or R/R and some JB Weld. Plus your time which may be worth something to you. I'd devalue the bike by as much as $1000 to be on the safe side, less if you want to take a chance. Tonnes of how-to info on this forum to help you out, should you buy it.
