I am thinking about changing out my chain and sprockets before spring. My buddy has a DL650 and had his chain replaced last summer at the local dealer. They put a riveted chain on the bike. From what I have read the DL1000 requires and endless chain and you need to remove the swing arm to replace the chain. Is this correct??

The procedure for both bikes is the same. They come with endless chains but riveted master link chains are the most common replacements.

Any safety or wear concerns using the riveted chain on the 1000? I really don't want to take apart the swingarm??

When done right with the proper tool the chains with the riveted master links will be as good or better then the one that came from the factory. I recommend that you get a couple of extra master links so that if you mess up you can give it another shot. It really is not that hard it just takes a careful approach. Get yourself a good riveting tool as well as come calipers from Harbor Freight and you will be set.

Let the flaming begin

I have used clip master links for 40 years without a problem

Maybe if the tool at HF etc is only 30+$ I might be a buyer.

* I use a cut off wheel to get rid of old continuous chains
